What type and length of rod was the young boy using…and…?
I bet it was a 9’ 5wt.
…so…Sage? Winston? T&T? TFO? Cabela’s? Gatti? Off the shelf? Custom? Walmart’s SA Combo for $49?
I bet the posters in the “How many $600-$700 rods do you own” are dying to find out!
You can learn to fly fish with any fly rod and get good with it. So why go over $100? As long as you consistently use that rod you become familiar and get very good with it. The minute you pick up a different fly rod weight/length/line/balance…you will probably go on the search for the holy grail of fly rods. ANYBODY can learn to start casting 50’ with the mentioned Wal-Mart rod. My point exactly…with experience any rod will do. Why the heck start off with a combo over $100 as a first rod? Oh well…that’s what makes horse races I guess. Differences of opinion. I will say that a 9’ 6wt is palin overkill for what he said he wants to fish with. PERIOD well…not overkill…but more than necessary
If you are in high vegation areas affecting casting…you aren’t going to be casting 50’ anyway.
Oh well…fun to read…if you must have a number 6 in there somewhere…get a 5wt and overline it with a 6 wt line. I have to go with Joe on this one. That young man could cast a 6’-6" 1wt overlined with a 3wt 50’…I bet.

oh…btw…who intentionally fishes for small fish? ME…and a brazillian others. Do people intentionally fish for blue gill? Anywhere there is blue gill there is bass. I am on a lake with northern pike (with pics I took of another gentlman 34.5", and Fritz got a 32", german browns, rainbows, I was with Buddy Sanders when he humbled me fly fishing and hauled in 22" trout. Don’t know how to spell it but kokanee salmon in the lake as well. BUT, on this lake I will INTENTIONALLY go to the dam and fish for SMALL smallmouth bass with a light fly rod. Just for the fun of it. Not for bragging rights. Also, Buddy took me small stream fishing for small brookies. INTENTIONALLY…when we could have been out on the lake fishing for BIG fish.
Just FYI…lot’s of people fish for small fish
Furthermore…I can catch/cast anything you can do on a 6wt with a 5wt. Again the weakest link is the tippet…not the rod.

Besides the obviousness of this statement, what is it your really trying to say here, and how does it apply to Skip? Please enlighten us.

Bass here can get pretty big, like 15#+, but chances of me getting into one of them is going to be pretty low as I concentrate now days on crappie and bream. Crappie up to and a little over 3# is not that uncommon and I have caught bream up to 1 3/4#. On the bass I would feel very fortunate to get one over 8# especially on a fly rod.
My big bass fishing would most likely be with a casting rod and reel. I use a lot of spinning gear for all 3, but lately I have had the itch to get ready for next spring with fly fishing for them when they get shallow. Sometime around Feb they will get in like 2’ of water and I can’t wait. Last year I use a 10’ rod and just flipped a tiny jig on one side of where they are and pull it over them and watch them come up and slam it.
So I thought about finding them and then backing off and use a fly rod to fish for them and have a ball.
It has been since I was a young kid back in the 60’s that I did any fly fishing.
