Help with Medelist reel#1495

I have several Medalist reels and love them,One has been used for 20 yrs. plus. Just bought an extra but found it is for right hand wind. can this reel be reversed? I’m handy, but never messed with on thats right hand wind. Would love a reply from someone knowledge of these reels. Ralph

Ralph, my 1594 is reversible but I don’t know about the 1495. The directions are fairly simple. Have you tried looking up a Pflueger web site to see if they have directions?

Vic

ralmor,

First off - Welcome to FAOL from Penna!! Are you able to post a pic of the innards? I have a 1494 1/2 DA model that has an adjustable arm with a patch of cork that controls the drag. These components are not switchable, as far as I can tell? With out actually seeing your drag system, I can’t give you any advice - good or bad! LOL!!!. Again, Welcome!!!

Best regards, Dave S.

Hi, ralmor

Yes the Medalist 1495 is convertible.

  1. Get a tiny flathead screwdriver, preferably a magnetic one. You'll also need a paper towel or napkin

  2. Remove the spool.

  3. On the frame, see the center post encircled by a metal ring and black gear.

  4. Wipe off the grease.

  5. Remove the 2 screws holding the 2 rings in place.

  6. Remove the metal ring. Be careful to keep it face up.

  7. Remove the black gear. Turn it face down. Note the tiny black plastic pawl. It sets on a tiny spring. Don't drop this.

  8. Replace the black gear, face down and the metal ring face up. Gently jiggle the gear in place on the tiny pawl. Hold in place and tighten down the screws.

  9. Now, put the spool back in. Palm the reel in your LEFT hand. Turn the crank forward. It should be free spinning. Now turn the crank toward you. You should feel a little resistance. SUCCESS!

  10. The only thing left is to change the location of the pillars. That’s it.
Welcome to the site Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and good luck with your new reel.

Those are the directions from Pflueger and I wonder why they don’t mention that you should turn the prawl 180 degrees …note it has a bevel and that is to engage the ratchets in the correct direction…and do note that you should change the direction of the line guard. …some of this stuff depends on the year of manufacture…if there aren’t ratchets on one side of the gear it is not reversible but that would be vintage.

You don’t mention whether your newly-acquired reel is a current or an older model. All of the early Medalist reels were right-hand wind and not interchangeable. This was true at least through the sixties.

That’s great information Lake Erie High Ball!

Would this 1494DA meet the criteria for a change to left hand wind?

“not mechanical in the least” Bob

Yes it will…I believe there will only be 4 ratchets on the other side…not a big deal just makes the click sound a little different.

I have done this on several of my reels. Works fine. Most rugged reels you’ll ever need.

GREAT STUFF!

bobbyg/ducksterman,

I believe that 1494DA in the picture is already set up for left hand retrieve? Based on the number of slots showing and the position of the line guard?

Best regards, Dave S.

:lol:Just checked it Dave. You’re right!! Big Duh-Uh!

“infinitely non-mechanical” Bob

Thanks to all! I’ts changed over now! Clearwater, thanks for the link. Ralph

Yes, both the 1494 and 1495 Medalists are reversible, as long as they are not too old. I think the switchover to reversible reels occurred in the early 60’s. The 1492 unfortunately has never been reversible. If you have an older non-reversible 1494 or 1495, you can still do the reversal if you buy a replacement ratchet plate.

BTW the 1492 can be reversed but it’s a little involved.

duckster, re the 1492, just how ‘involved’ are we talking about . . . ?

Off the top of my head it involves reversing the pawl and doing some spring bending.
