My dad, an avid bass angler had absolutely no idea what to tell me when it came to using a flyrod or tying flies.
It’s kind of like the Presbyterian kid telling his Dad that he wants to be a Methodist or a Lutheran, but really isn’t sure why. The Dad stands there like a deer in the headlights. He just cannot understand why you would trade your 6’6" Berkley worm rod for a hickory switch and a batch of hooks with chicken feathers on them. Certainly there must be something goofy in the gene pool. He’ll get over it and may even convert himself. Stranger things have happened in life.
Actually, he took it really well when I told him that i wanted to learn to flyfish. He just had no idea what to do about it or how to help me along. Besides that, I didn’t exactly give up my other equipment, I just wanted to learn a new technique. He treated it the same way he did when I went from bobbers and worms for bluegill to casting plastic worms for bass. He taught me everything that he could and tried to help in any way that he could. The problem was that his knowledge pool wasn’t very deep on this subject. When I started flyfishing again he decided to go out and buy a flyrod also, now he and I are working through the learning process together.
You can read, see pictures, talk to folks etc but the bottom line is “do you enjoy it?” So what? Sew buttons on ice cream & wATCH “EM MELT OFF” Are ya doin it for you or someone else??? Take a class or two, watch listen & learn. It’s a hoot!
