I had a PM today from Ron Tidd our own Geek guy.
He is serious about learning to tie flies. Questions about
what to get etc. I have talked with him at length and he has
relented and is allowing me to post this Help request.
Here is what I am asking. Can we members of FAOL put together
a set of good tools and materials for him? If any of you might have
some good stuff laying in a drawer collecting dust that you would be
willing to donate to this project, just shoot me an e-mail (denny@conranch.com)
(NO PMs Please.)
and tell me what you have. I think it might be best if I act as central,
make up a kit on paper from your donations and have each of you then ship direct
to Ron. I will provide you with a ship to address.
I really do not think we need to completely overload him with duplicate stuff and
Items. I do think we can set him up nicely.
To start the list off, Conranch Hackle is going to send quite a bit of high
Quality dry fly hackle of different colors. Eventually we will add soft hackle
Hen hackle to the list.
He needs it all, has nothing other than an empty worm container.
Come on, lets show our geek what Fly fishing folks are all about.
We will convert him I am sure.
After this is complete I will post a complete list of who and what.
(unless someone does not want on the list)
It might be more effective to make up a master list of the items that you would like to put in Ron’s goodie box. That way you could list that item as promised when someone sends you an email pledge. When the item arrives, you could remove that item from the list. I think that this could prevent duplication of effort and make it a lot easier for those of us who would like to thank Ron for his excellent work especially over the last couple of months. BTW, no one would be limited to just those items on the list. If you have 17 Sacred Monkey Pelts, you could always send one for Ron even though they are not on the master list. Just a suggestion. 8T
Things are rolling along nicely.
We have a vise (Dan Vise)
NEED ALL TOOLS
Need hooks & thread
Could use dubbing of different kinds.
Anyone have extras on any Krystal Flash?
Hackle gauge?
Have some flank feathers, both Mallard & Woodie
Have some assorted colors of Pheasant tails
Just because I have not listed it, we still can use it.
Old guys thinkin sometimes is a bit slow.
Several items have been offered and may have been shipped by now or are waiting for the PO to open tomorrow.
I am surprised at no tools except for a couple nice dubbing needles and Alum hook tray.
We do need some:
Bobbins
scissors
whip finisher
hair stacker
hackle pliers
HOOKS (have a few but need more) size 16, 14, 12,10s
need more dubbing
Thanks to all of you that have pledged items for Ron’s beginner tying, so far. Still need items.
My e-mail server has been down since last night. I was told it would be up and running in one hour. That was before noon today and still no go.
If any of you have sent e-mail to me, please re send it by PM. If you have sent and not gotten a response, your message is still hanging in my server and the possibility of it being lost is high, from past experiences. Drat!!
We do have Al Campbells terrific tying lessons here on FAOL, but a hands-on teacher is still the best way to go. Trav (husband, Neil Travis) is offering to help Ron. Ron does get to our house in Wa., and Trav will get him off on the right foot.
That is cool (I’m showing my age, does anybody use that expression any more?), I don’t think you can beat individual fly tying lessons. Ron should get off to a good start.
