I am new to tying fly’s, and have actually never fly fished before. I am a senior in high school, and we are currently working on tying flys in our art class at school. I bought a beginners kit to get the necessary tools, but I do not know where to get new materials for after the kit i have runs out. Where can I get materials both online, or locally? Also I will probably be fishing in a pond in SC, or at Lake Thurmond on the SC/GA border, can you recommend fly’s with instructions for these situations?
“On line” go to your Goggle search engine and type in “Fly Ting Supplies”. You should get, over 105,000 pages to check out!
Also, look in your yellow page phone book for “Sporting Goods-Fishing” to locate any local fly fishing shops.
Of course, you can also, as far as tying the actual flies, ask any and all questions of members of this great board, or, go to the home page, here and click on “fly tying” on the left side menu.
Welcome, to board by the way, sorry I forgot to say that before blabbering off about finding materials!!
You really CAN ask as many questions, as you need to, of the members here Adam.
GREAT, bunch of folks, here and ALWAYS eager and willing to help out!
Hope to hear from you!!
I’m not sure where your located, but my suggestion would be to look through the sponsor pages here on FAOL. Lots of quality places to buy materials. The sponsors here are invited to be sponsors based on their customer service and product quality. That has to be a pretty good suggestion.
Also, as mentioned, check the local phone book to see if there is a fly shop located near you.
Adam on the main page click on beginning fly fishing, also check out fly tying. Then click on Features and click on Al Campbell . Al passed away a while back but his series of Too Simple flies are second to none. Scroll down there are several too simple flies to choose from . They all catch fish and are very good beginner ties. AL’s instructions along with pictures to guide you along are excellent.
When you finish with the simple stuff you can check out fly tying 101 which is a little more advanced.
Also Check out also the fly tying forum where you will received tons of really good advice.
There is so much stuff on here it will take forever to thumb thru 1/2 of it. All good stuff.
Welcome to FAOL by the way.
Hi…just got interested in tying…and boy I am excited about it.
I got my beginner’s vise on ebay and have been reading about tying and watching some videos on how to do things. I do have a lot to learn, but it will be great to ty my first fly and get it in the water. So far it has been great to read other people’s advice and to learn about the resources available for tying. I’m looking forward to reading more .
