help me identify this fly

I was up on a small stream today, and there was a large black fly that the was on the water periodically, and one had 3 fish after it before the 3 one got it.

it had a very distinct head, a abdomen that was longer, and a tail section that was even longer (all black), and a clear wing case with six legs.

I have seen a picture of this fly before, and a a dry fly variation. however I am unable to find it now.

Solo,
How many drinks did you have before you saw the pictue of that fly?
Coughlin

absolutely zero… never tasted alcohol sorry lol

I saw the thing on the tailgate of my truck, and I have seen a picture of it online before.

Sounds like it might have been a brown/black stonefly.
How big was it overall?

Describe the stretch of water where you saw it?

bobbyg

I’d say a good inch maybe more

Something like this ?

Mato that is the fly - now is that a stone? anybody got a good pattern?

Yep! That is a stonefly. There are a lot of good patterns out there. Probably the best one to start with is the Stimulator. I don’t bother with much else…well, I take that back. I like Earl Madsen’s AuSable Skunk (Dry)

I’m looking for a different example of the AuSable Skunk…this isn’t quite it…at least what I know as the Skunk. This works though.

…FOUND IT … http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4478

Check here for info on the Stimulator: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/intermediate/part25.php

You might try Bird’s Stonefly or the Goddard Caddis.

This weeks fly of the week is a stonefly. Just adjust the colors to match what you are seeing.

Just tie up a few Stimulators in different colors & you got the adult stoneflys covered…

thnx for the info guys…
