It’s a midge from the family diptera. It’s probably the single most important insect in a trout’s diet, and the one most over looked by fly fishers. They are available to the trout almost year round on many waters that stay warm enough in the winter, and in lakes, they are the mainstay meal.

Hi Riverdancer,
Over the years, I have had these swarm at me while fishing and didn,t have a clue. As I have tried to progress at rout fishing, I guess I paid a little more attention as to what was occuring. I was fishing a lake about two weeks ago and actually saw these comming to the surface and leaving their shell. It was magnificant to see.
I appreciate the information very much.

Here is a copy of the emergent midge

Dude, tie on a Griffith’s Gnat and go crazy!!
On Henry’s Lake, and Island Park Res. they emerge in mumbers so thick that they become a nuiscance to fishermen/women. They crawl all over you, get into your nose and mouth if you’re not careful. They are mistaken for mosquitos, but don’t bite. Someone,(I don’t remember who) was quoted as saying, “But what do they WANT”, when they swarmed all over him and he couldn’t drive them off. They land on anything and everything when they emerge. Don’t leave your windows rolled down, or your camper door open. They are very prolific, and are an important food source for the trout in the lake.

As others have indicated, it’s a member of the True Fly family, Chironomidae, and in this case a male, due to the plumose antennae. They are most effectively imitated in the larval or pupal stages, as trout prefer taking them before emergence on the water’s surface as adults.
A couple of you good folks have asked for the recipe for that emerger.
so here she is…
That is just something I lashed together this afternoon to decorate the thread,
Recipe,
Wing - Dyed mallard fibres,
Hackle - Sunburst grizzly cock #1
Hook - Partridge K12ST
Thread - rusty brown,
breathers at head and tail - Antron or bright poly yarn,
Wing pad - Neon orange Uni 1/0
Body - Pearl mylar, open ribbed with dubbed fox fur take it all the way up over the wingpad
Thorax - Fox fur,
It’s a bit complex, but you can modify this one to work for you http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/112204fotw.html[/url:d5964]
The pattern does not need to be so complex, feel free to rib the body with wire or just thread. Lacquering is desirable but not essential.
When the fly is tied, lacquer the body, let dry & lacquer again.
This fly will sit in the surface and will sink your tippet, giving a ‘clean’ presentation.
Happy tying and tight lines,
Roy
A very nice fly Roy!
I seem to have more results with basic black (as the lady at the cocktail party said!!!). http://www.dtnicolson.dial.pipex.com/blackfoammidge18.jpg[/url:aa5cf]
This is a brown version which has the recipe. http://www.dtnicolson.dial.pipex.com/_wp_generated/wp14f19e9e.png[/url:aa5cf]
There are quite a few patterns here under Buzzers (we call them that because we can’t spell chironomid). http://www.dtnicolson.dial.pipex.com/index.html[/url:aa5cf]
