Helgrammite flys

Looking for a good pattern----something to make your skin crawl. This must be a tough one as I can`t seem to find any Tom

Go to Fly of the Week - Previous Flies- 4th. quarter of 1999 for a helgramite pattern here at FlyAnglersOnLine. Sure there are others.

I posted this one (a nymph pattern, not an adult) on your previous post on the main board but the the thread does not show on the board even though it can be found using the search engine. Clicking on the thread redirects to another thread so I don’t know what is going on (probably needed to be in this forum rather than the main board).

This fly pattern is in Dick Stewart’s Bass Flies book on page 39:

Ugly Helgy (Dick Stewart)
Hook: 4X long, sizes 2 to 8
Thread: Black or brown
Weight: Lead wire wrapped full length of hook shank
Tail: 4 pieces of black ostrich herl, 2/3 body length
Body: Brown chenille
Rib: Black ostrich herl, length of body
Legs: Sections of black ostrich herl, 2 on each side, 1/2 body length (my note: These are tied at the head extending loosely half way along the body)
Head: Thread (my addition)

Best of luck.

I like Harry Murray’s fly

May the fish that you catch always be larger than the hole in your net

I’ll second the Murray Hellgramite. Especially with hourglass eyes. The Franke Hellgramite would probably be my second choice.

I’ve been tying and using a version of Bill Skilton’s fly for the last couple years with good results.

Here is one that I have been tying for a few years now and can assure you it is a killer, especially early in the season.

I sometimes substitute rubber legs for the biots for more action.

Though it is not meant to be one, I will fish the Brooks Stone as a Hellgrammite at times. Never had any complaints yet.

Don

I use the Murray Helgrammite pattern. It works really good and is super easy to tie. It’s basically just a Black and Grizzly Wooley-Bugger with a little longer tail and a pair of ‘feelers’ up front.

Semper Fi!

I saw a Helgrammite pattern that used black electrician’s tape for the wing case…looked pretty good…[it was run the whole length of the body]…is that accurate?

Tom,Sorry for the late post

Thanks-a-lot for all the info, now all I need to do is get some decent ones made. Tom

For what it’s worth, the woolly bugger was originally created as a hellgrammite imitation

I’ve tried several Helgramite patterns, but would you believe it…the best one I’ve used is simply a modified black Wooly Bugger. The only difference is that I tie a pair of black rubber Silly Legs at the front to represent ‘pinchers’, and I use a Grizzly, or Blue Dun-colored hackle instead of black. I think I got the pattern online somewhere, but I can’t remember where.
