I’m headed to western Maryland the second week in October and plan on fishing as much as possible. I was thinking of hiring a guide for a day early in the week. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Orvis guy at Wisp.
Mike Davis at Savage River Outfitters. He’s a good guy and knows his stuff! His shop and rental cabins are right on the tailwater section of the Savage.
PM me for info if you like, there are some excellent options for native brookies all over that area if that interests you.

I read the weekly Maryland DNR fishing report. They usually tell of any changes on the savage. Which is where you should go. I hear of consistently good stonefly hatches in 16 of orange and lime. And sulphurs come out in masses, but I’m not sure about october. I’d bet the BWO’s would be out then, but no guarantee.
The North Branch of the Potomac is another good venue. Many nice brookie streams though depending on the area of focus. Marty has a good recommendation up near the Savage. Early Oct should still have some willing fish. PM if more specifics desired.

If it’s Indian Summer, flyfish the Potomac for non-stop bass action. After those first frosts they go on a voracious feed fattening up for the winter.

I will actually be there this weekend. If you want to follow up with me next week please do…
Also any recommendations on flys etc. I would appreciate it…
