I have a bottle of Rumpf head cement that I have only used a few times. The problem is that I somehow managed to cement its lid closed with itself. Short of using a pair of channel locks on the lid, I can’t budge it. Is there a way that I am missing to undo the lid? Is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future either on this bottle or the one I have to buy to replace this one?
Carefully use the channel locks on the lid!! Do NOT hold the glass jar in your bare hands. Go slowly.
After you get it open, or in the case you decide to forego the fun attempt, on your next bottle … run some Vaseline or candle wax around the inside of the top threads, and around the threads on the bottle.
To remove the encrusted remains … CAREFULLY use a bodkin to pick out all the crud. We will not go in to why I know this, just suffice it to know I do.

Ha ha. At least I now know that I’m the only one that seems to permanently on the wrong side of or Mr. Murphy’s law. LOL. I’ll guess I really don’t have anything to lose trying to open it. If it doesn’t work, I have to buy a new bottle, if the bottle breaks and I lose the contents, i gotta buy a new bottle, but if for some strange reason I manage to actually do it without a hitch I’ll only have to find out where the wife put the vaseline.
Get some warm/hot water and hold the lid upside down in it for a while and then try it.
run the cap under hot water and at will come off.
clean the threaded end of the bottle and chip away the dried cement from inside the cap.
Thanks for the help. I got it with the channel locks and then gooped up the threads with some vaseline after I picked them as clean as I could.
On a side note I realize that I should probably get some thinner for this stuff. Do I have to get the thinner made by Rumpf or can I use nail polish cleaner(acetone)?
Rumpf is my favorite head cement or maybe it’s the fumes? :shock:
It has the perfect consistency that keeps on flowing for a large range of flies. .
I rarely use the thinner but at $1.85 a bottle…why use anything else.
Another trick for loosening tight (stuck) lids that my Methodist grandmother taught me eons ago is to run the end of a table knife around the edge of the lid and to pry up all the way around the cap, being sure to not miss an area around the lid. Does NOT always work on stuck head cement bottles, but often enough to warrant a try.
