Hazel's October Caddis SBS

Another John Hazel fly I found over on Speypages. Not sure if it’s really supposed to be an October Caddis but it’s orange, they’re kinda orange and they’re starting to come out around here so their you go.

hook - Dai Riki 899 #8
thread - UTC 140/Danville 210 tan (Danville for the wing only - popped the UTC three times trying to tie down that clump of moose)
tail - elk hair
body - dubbing rusty orange
wing - moose body hair
collar/head - elk hair

Part 1

mash barb, start thread

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of elk; tie in/trim butts

clean, stack, measure (shank - looking back, I think I should have used the whole hook for length; these may be a bit stubby) a clump of moose body; tie in at base of return wire, trim butts

divide and post; leave the wings facing somewhat forward

Part 2

dub thread/dub body to wing; figure-8 some between the wings

create dubbing loop in front of wing

clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) a clump of elk; trim to length

wax thread loop, insert elk in clip, insert clip in loop, capture butts with loop, spin

moisten fingers, stroke fibers back, wrap

Part 3

half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim head, leaving a sparse collar

Scott
