Was in the process of dyeing up some stuff and saw this one over on Speypages.
hook - Dai Riki 899 #8
thread - UTC 140 burnt orange/Danville 210 black
tail - moose body hair
rib - x-small copper wire
body - dubbing rusty orange
body hackle - grizzly dyed hot orange (undersize by 2)
throat - guinea dyed hot orange
wing - moose body hair
Part 1
mash barb, start thread; tie in rib and wrap to bend
clean, stack, measure (gap width at tie-in) a clump of moose body hair; tie in
dub thread/dub body to double wire
tie in hackle; wrap to tail
capture tip with wire, continue forward; helicopter end, cover with thread
Moose hair I’ve worked with has been fairly stiff, which is great for tails; for wings, it’s been more of a challenge. The Flymaster thread (210 denier?) I used did a good job of flairing the butts; I’d imagine something like GSP would work well, too.
