I was browsing the Orvis web site last night and came across a new fly they had listed in their “Hot New Fly” section called the Noble Chernobyl. It looks like a regular Chernobyl Ant with everything but the kitchen sink attached. It’s got rubber legs, elk hair for the tail, a folded piece of foam for a wing and a parachute post forward for a good wrap of grizzly hackle. I laughed myself silly as I was looking over the tying instruction (very complete step by step photo’s) as they kept adding more and more stuff. The finished fly looked like a miniature WWII destroyer that had been converted into a floating carnival . Then they showed the underside and it was a whole different story. It had one of the best hopper profiles I’ve ever seen. Take a look and tell me what you think.
Normand, I’m pretty egocentric so I can only reply that Orvis listed the Noble Chernobyl as a Hot New Fly because, I , Eight Thumbs, didn’t know about it. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine.
Duck, if they put anything else on it, it would start to come alive and start to talk.
I still like the way that bug must look to a fish. Birds or anything above it will die laughing. 8T
I guess I must also be living in a box, cuz I never saw this “fly” before. My question is just how many more flotation elements can be added to a foam fly to assist it in floating? I might rename this fly the “Chernobyl-stimi-madam-'chute.” Whew! If it gets any bigger it could be used like a Waller’s Waker.
What is a Waller Waker? I’ve been living in a box on that one. To me, this fly looks like a regular Chernobyl Ant all decked out for a G*y Pride Day Regatta.   8T
Thanks for the link. That bug is certainly is going to get some attention when it lands. Overall, it looks pretty reasonable and seems to fit together unlike the Noble Chernobyl which might have been developed by a large committee. Thanks again. 8T
Comparing the Noble Chernobyl with your worst ‘Dating’ nightmare; “How long will it take to get ready Honey?” OH Eight Hrs, is that OK?
The NC is unsophisticated and it needs (PLASTIC) surgery.

I have to agree, Doug, that this is truly a bad mix in the Chernobyl Ant’s gene pool. Some critters just ought not be cross bred, and this is one of them. Frankly, I would not show anyone that fly if I tied it, which I wouldn’t, cuz I gots better sense than that. 8) I’m always amazed at what gets thrown against the wall to see if it sticks.
Joe,
Even though it’s risky to start the question of what consitutes a ‘LURE’, never mind! I’m too old fashioned.
I’m surprised there isn’t air bags on it! If fish had a sense of humor, it would be fun to hear them laughing.
I think a Dave’s Hopper is more to my liking.
Doug
While the Noble Chernobyl may not be destined to become a classic pattern, I still like the way it looks from the fish view—very buggy. I also think it will float just about anything that you hang from it. Large stone flies are no challenge at all. Heck, if the Noble Chernobyl had been around in 1912, the Titanic could have been saved; just attach a Noble Chernobyl to the bow and stern. Well, maybe 10 or 12 to each end. 8T
