Hey Carp - first of all - NICE TIES!!!
Never used a black scud. NightAngler1 (aka Leonard) was kind enough to send me a DOZEN brown scuds to try next time out so I’m going to use those first to see how they do.
What do yo think makes the black scud work? Is it the shape? Bead head? Color? Would love to get your thoughts - I have the material to tie them but just never though I had the need for it…until now.
thanks for sharing!
Jim
Hi carpcrazy,
I love your flies and yes I’ve used a black scud many years ago but mine didn’t have a bead head (I told you it was a lot of years ago!) It’s funny, I had completely forgotten about black scuds until your post. I like your wet fly and like you I sure do enjoy catching carp on a fly! Take care & …

Jim, I fish mostly on rivers with water not to clear, this because on the sierra norte there are only two seasons, rainy season and very rainy season, I think the black scud gives a better silouette for the fish to target and the bead gives it the weight needed to sink fast on deep pools and flat areas as well as a little shine on the fly
Al thanks for the comments, and man carp are really tough fighters!!! I just love stalking them in shallow water its a real thrill!!!
Of course AWESOME!
Huh I have never seen a black scud!VERY cool.
And ONE question!
What is the hackle on the wet fly?
Am I correct in thinking its guinea?
Thats right Chris, its yellow guinea, I really like those feathers
Yay.
I have the standard white, And I really like them also!
sorry for my confusion but, so youve caught carp on the black scud? cus i like catching carp but theyre so rare where i fish and ive been wanting to catch some more.
Hi,
I’ve not fished scuds much, and never a black one. However, there are some black nymph patterns that are very successful and I could see that working well. I also like the wet fly. Biots make great bodies and they are very durable. Two great flies.
Two very nice flies, it maybe that the ‘Black Scud’ is taken for a drowned beetle. I can’t say I’ve every seen a black scud.
Is the wet fly wing single or is it folded? On the Clyde and Tweed in the nineteenth century, a single wing was used a lot.
Maybe carp are better at counting than trout.
DD, yep I have used that fly to take carp, but it also works great on panfish and trout
Donald, I used to matching sections of guinea hen wings

CC, a #10 black scud sans beadhead has been one of my most secret flies here for years.
