Hope this is the right way to do this. JC and LF Plse correct me if I have erred in any way or just move this to the right place, or give your public blessing…
I have come up with a date for the SW Alberta FAOL Fish In 08
Date 26 July - 02 Aug 2008
No reason just a good compromise.
The place is between two RV Camp grounds, Cabin locations, the deciding factor will be your/our response, “IE” the # of folks that express an interest and give a thumbs up for coming and enjoying this wonderful area.
What I would like is some ideas as to what we could do OTHER THAN FISHING ! Games, Poker runs etc…
There is touring the fantastic geography and tourist attractions of the area.
We can basically set this up any way we want as it is of course a first of for FAOL in this area of the world. (I think)
Thanks in advance for your input and assistance everyone.
The first weekend in August is a long weekend up here… generally busy, but folks to have it off.
I should be around earlier, but I may be away for the weekend.
Who else is interested??
One good thing about the date…
Any FFF members at the conclave http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4451)can take the short drive north from Whitefish and hit the Fish-In.
The FFF conclave is July 22-26.
I usually try and hide on long weekends in this province and can usually be found fishing small overlookked as in small isolated mountain streams on these weekends. I just spend so much time in the bush for work and I enjoy the quietness and find that alot of my usuall fishing locals get busy with sometimes loud and obnoxous people that don’t respect others space.
While a long weekend would be good for travel, I think the fishing itself may be less enjoyable for some during a long weekend. I will be trying to make it to this fish- in regardless of the date but personally think a less busy weekend would be better.
What kind of activities are possible for non fishing folks in the area? My fiance may attend with me and I’ll have to insure she’s entertained or it will limit my fishing time. I’ll probably use a weeks vacation and make it a good trip so I’m sure I will have more than my fair share of fishing time.
Anytime your heading up, just let me know. I’m always looking for someone to fish with. I have yet to explore this area since moving here at the end of the fishing season. I’ll have lots of time come opening, and I’ll probably get to fish the muskeg daily after work. I’ll be fishing Sheep creek alot as well so it’ll be a good summer.
Spectacular Frank Slide is something you have to see… to drive/walk through TONS of rock that was once a mountain is phenominal. Words don’t do it justice.
Waterton National Park (North end of Glacier Park) is a beautiful place where the prairies go right up to the mountains. It’s an hour south of the Pass area.
There are lots of hikes, of all fitness level, some cool ghost towns, mine tours, touristy shopping, a couple of small museums (and the interprative centre at Frank Slide), as well as the typical amazing scenery.
Let me know if there is a particular/prefered activity… there is lots to do in the area, but little of it resembles “urban” pleasures.
We have always wanted to head down to the southern part of the province, so as long as I can convince her that therre are things other than fishing for her and I to do and it’s not just a off fishing with the boys trip where she will be bored I think I have a good chance to make it to the Fish in.
We have been in Alberta for 4 years now but have only been in the Northern part of the provice. My job keeps me working in areas where most travel to for thier play time. We lived in Hinton for just over 3 years, and have now moved to Grande Cache. Where we plan to stay as long as possible ( ie work ).
As long as I get a day or two fishing I’ll be happy to site see the rest of my trip. She fishes too but chucks gear, I’m trying to convert her and she actually picked up a fly rod briefly last year so maybe by the fish in I’ll have her in waders.
I’m slowly working on planning for a trip. Once dates and details are confirmed I’ll kick it into gear and probably start pacing a hole in my floor waiting for the snow to melt and July to get here…
Hillard,
There is lots of great gear fishing down here, from lakers (and pretty much all trout) to pike and walleye.
Of course, once you’re down here it’s hard not to want to pick up a fly rod.
Bring an extra handful of those white and natural bunny streamers and I’ll trade you some Pine Squirrel Cheaters. Or maybe we can just bring the tying materials and spend some time at the vise.
Sounds like a real good chance to make it to this event, she likes the vacation idea and will probably fish as well. Maybe not FF but she’ll get out with me for the day. Are the dates offically set as of yet, I’ll have to start planning soon.

We will most likely camp, where is everyone planning on staying?
above is a link to the campground that flyfishfairwx originally mentioned.there are several others in the area plus cabins and B+B’s scroll down to lost lemon
Thanks, that was the one I was looking at, how long in advance should I book a spot to be sure I get one that time of year. I don’t want to drive 11hours to find I can’t get a spot.
I am planning of booking as soon possible once I finalize the days I will be comming to crowsnest. I’ll probably stay for 3 nights and 3 days of fishing with the traveling and that way we can take our time getting there, seeing the sights on the way and not be exhausted at the end of the trip. All and all it’ll be a week trip for us, and we’ll have to stop in Edmonton to visit family on the roundabout way I’ll take home.
The preparations are started so hopefully everything works out and nothing comes up at the last moment that prevents me going.
From J Castwell:
“Add it. Looks fine. The sooner, the better for those wishing to attend. They have no idea of the value of free advertising they will be getting at the campground.”
As per above I am posting this for all to see.
I have contacted the RV/Campground and that should be the last component required. It was also the hardest as no place had “everything” I was hoping for… so here it is the
First Annual SW AB FISH IN 2008
Dates 26 Jul - 02 Aug 2008, best compromise due to Canada day and July 4th weekend also “Thunder In the Vally” the week before, and Aug long weekend after.
Place - South West Alberta CrowsNest Pass and area. Just Google it and there is a plethora of info , also in the thread there is lots of info there.
Location - Lost Lemon RV and Campground, http://www.highway3.ca/communities/crowsnestpass.htm which I think at this time the best compromise of the Campgrounds and locations avail, some were too small etc…the only thing this place does not have is a indoor gathering place, but I am working on that with nearby locations…
Mary Ann is the owner and asks that we book ASAP as it will start to get full for the Aug Long weekend.
I am free to assist anybody who requires it.
Activities: Fishing of course, how ever there are lots of things to do in the area, and any and all suggestions are welcome.
