I have not cast the three wgt but have cast the 7 wgt. My impression of the 7 wgt I cast was that it threw nice loops but was a rather heavy set up and I think over priced. I think there are a number of rods out there that give you more rod for the money. Just to name a few I think that Redington, St Croix and Cabela’s and others all have rods of equal or better value in the same price range.
In 45 years of fly fishing in a dozen different states and Canada I’ve seen only two LL Beans rods on the stream. I’m thinking maybe there’s a reason for that.
I posted the question for a friend…I see what you are saying, but I told him if he doesn’t like it he can send it back…They have a crazy guarantee!!!
Yes they guarantee every thing --My son returned boots that he returned after 2 years that had a bad spot of sewing — repaired the boot and said if it wasn’t good enough he could have a new pair. If you have their charge card everything is free shipping.
I have bought Two of these rods for my son-in-laws. They both just started with these rods and as I watch them cast I see they will be great starter outfits. I think if you want a three weight rod you would look at something more then a starter outfit. I think the price of these rods is to bring people into the sport without breaking the bank.
Just my 2 cents worth.

A couple of years ago I gave away my first generation graphite “Double L” rod. I kick myself still. Great rod.
I like the beans. I have tried all the series but the quest though. The streamlight is the next line up they carry and well worth the money in my opinion. Plus you can return anything of theirs for any reason. If you don’t like it send it back.
Dudly that first generation double l was a sweet rod. I lost the tip on my eight weight and traded it in for a new one, not even close. I ended up trading that one in for a streamlight.
I pretty sure you can get a Cabela’s Three Forks 3 wt. outfit for less money. Its a 3 pc. I’ve had 3 of um over the years (gave one away). The rod casts like a rod costing much more than the $49 price (for the rod only).
I can not comment on the LLBean outfit but I can on the Cabela’s…a fine casting rod.
I’d like to second the comments on the Cabelas 3 forks 3 piece 3 weights. I own several 3 wts (St. Croix, Orvis, Lamiglass) and the $50 Cabelas is one of my favorite rods that I reach for most often.
I have cast this particular LL Bean rod and it is a good rod, but for MY casting style, I could not tell a bit of difference except for the price tag. Now, there is a difference with the other manufacturers mentioned above, but the Cabelas just “feels right” when I cast it and can’t help to grin when I think it’s “only a $50 rod” after landing 50 bluegill in an afternoon.
