Hair Materials

I just acquired some hair from a local gentleman(not his) and other than the deer, I’m not sure what flies I can tie with it. I’m sure there are places to find this info except I’m not real efficiant with computers or searches. The hair that I have is; black bear, caribou, boar, dall sheep, moose, and deer. Any recipes for certain flies or sites that I can review would be helpfull.

THANKS,

FC,

There are loads of patterns out there that use one or more of the materials you’ve acquired.

That being said, however, obviously you’ve not yet found a ‘use’ for those flies in your fishing.

If I were you, I’d hang onto the materials, and try adding/substituting them into the flies that you DO use. It should be pretty evident from the different materials what they may or may not be ‘good’ for in the flies you already use.

Just a few ‘suggestions’, and I’m sure others may add much more:

Black Bear makes good streamer hair and decent dubbing. Nice bushy tails too.

Moose Mane is great for ribing and for tails, as is the longer hair from boars. Moose body will spin, but not as well as deer in most cases. The body hair does work for Wulff style dries. Dall Sheep I’m not too familair with, but I’d see if can be spun like deer or used for wings on Wulffs, etc… I know that Caribou spins well, and makes great humpys and bass bugs.

Play with it, have fun, experimenting with new materials in old patterns can give you flies that are very effective, new to the fish, and maybe you’ll hit on a real ‘winner’ or two.

Good Luck!

Buddy

Thanks for your reply, I’m new to ffing and obviously tying, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Carp,

Just a few ideas.
black bear - Wings on any type of fly. Underfur for wirey dubbing on big nymphs.
caribou - spun hair for small irresistibles.
boar - bristles for antennaes, tails, legs or perhaps wrapped bodies.
dall sheep- excellent for spinning and trimming for coffin dry flies
moose- tails, wrapped bodies

Just make sure the materials are clean.

Allan

Hi Carp
In addition to the good suggestions you already have received…

The caribou floats a bit higher than deer and can be used as a substitute on many flies.

Moose hair is sometimes used for wings on wet flies, especially for salmon. And Black Bear is very good winging material.

Here are a couple of patterns to illustrate. [url=http://www.danica.com/flytier/jking/jking.htm:dd4a4]http://www.danica.com/flytier/jking/jking.htm[/url:dd4a4]

John

Thanks for the ideas. I wrote them all down for quick reference and hope to be using them soon.

Better late than never: You can use deer hair for ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Try some DHE’s, or some muddlers etc.: it’s a good skill to have. Moose is good for tails on adams’ and other dry flies

RL

Thanks for the additional ideas, this place is great.RL, please forgive me but what is a DHE

THANKS TO ALL!

Thanks for the Awesome links. There is so much info here and I’m still trying to get the hang of searching for things, but I stink w/ a computer. Now that I think about it, you folks should see me with my flyrod or at the bench.

With all the ideas and references you have been given, study them and try things you think might work,or maybe even not work. The thing to remember that alot of fish have been fished hard and maybe all it takes to fool them is something different.
Good luck and have fun.

sorry, its all right, the DHE is an emerger pattern and stands for deer hair emerger, and is a standard searching pattern for emergers. It was created by bob wyatt, and the body can be variated.

I was wondering how often people re-check topics that they have replied to. Now I know of at least one person, and I thank you. Hans beat you to it. I sure do appreciate everyone’s time. That is exactly what I needed, a picture and instructions.

THANKS,

FYI, some good DHE tips appear in the various links above. I like this fly but sometimes have had problems getting it to float properly myself. Thanks for posting those links.

I see what you are saying Tyflier and agree w/ you 100%. As stated befor, I believe that this site is grrrrreat. I have found(been given) so much info here. It would have taken many, many moons for me to get where I’m at in this sport.I have a long way to go yet, and with the knowledge of fellow fishers here it has been an absolutely awesome experience.

Again,Thanx To All!
