I bought a new vise recently a Dyna-King Barracuda. When it arrived I unpackaged it and put it in a prominent place in my tying area where you could see it easily.
Mean while the neighbor kid, one of my son’s friends has been accompanying us on fly fishing trips and wanted to learn how to tie better. I told my wife he had his own equipment and the other day he was over and we were tying together. He was using my Peak and I was tying on the Barracuda.
I ended up buying the kid a gift. Just a small tackle box to put his vise in and some materials to get better organized. It was a 3 shelved Plano tackle box - no big deal. I’m cutting chenille, and rubber legs and giving him some older neck patches that I don’t use any longer and then show my wife the care package that I made for him, WHEN she asks if I was going to put HIS vise in the box too? True story, swear - Momma thought that Barracuda was the neighbor kids.
I had to fess up and tell her that was my vise, just like I hear about those old shoes she keeps ending up with.
I thought that you might be able to relate to such a story and would see the humor in it. I’m just glad that she didn’t send him home with my vise. Now that would have been a kick in the pants.
I once worked out a deal with a local fly shop to buy a reel on the installment plan. I scrimped a buck or two from lunch funds and finally paid off that reel. I brought it home and put it in my desk drawer. Momma went looking for “something” and found it.
I had to return it to pay for something-or-another that I’ve since forgotten.
I never did see the humor in having to return the reel, but she sure did.
SOM, Sometimes sacrafices have to be made for the good of the family unit. I think that you made the right choice, there probably have been other reels since then. Like I say when I buy something new, it’s the new fly rod or reel or whatever, it’s just the next new fly rod or reel or whatever.
Here, she will usually ask me if she can buy this, or that, and always, ALWAYS, the answer is yes, if she wants it she’s already decided it is worth it. She is not frivolous.
Reciprocally, she never questions when something new turns up in one of my little zones.
Life is just too short to fuss over money or where it goes.
Trying to cut down on the “Wish I Had’s”, and bolster the “Glad I Did’s”.
If I go to buy something for tying it’s usually because the item has migrated from my tying desk over to VEE’s and it hasn’t found it’s way back yet. If either of us find something new or unique that we just can’t live without, we buy two. One for her and one for me. If I run out, I buy another, if she runs out, she takes mine.
We are waaaaaayyyyyyy past the need stage of fly tying and function solely on the want part of it. The good thing is, when we pass away, our kids could open a fly shop with our materials alone.
Celebrated the 20th this past spring with Lady_Bug, She doesnt fly fish, but she will take a spinning outfit on some local ponds and the nearest State Park lake if we go as a family (teenage kids). Like a few implied, we each pretty much buy what we want (within monatery reason) throughout the year. Went shopping today at among other places, a Hobby Lobby and Craft2000(Think Hobby Lobby and Michaels combined without the home furnishings) All items bought between both stores for what I was looking for. Not much spent in value this trip, but even so, she never batted an eye.
