I have seen hackles stroked back, glued and used as wings, but cannot find the relevant instructions on site. Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Jim Clarke
The ‘Flytyers Benchside Reference’ has instruction listed as ‘reversed hackle wings’. It’s a lovely book and a great addition to any tyers library.
The basic method is to stroke the hackle barbs from the tip towards the butt, reversing their natural directions. Stroke the fibers back for a section about 1/4" long, holding the fibers in position by pinching between thumb and forfinger. Hold the prepared feather parallel to the hook shaft, wing pointing forward, make 2 loose thread wraps. Gently pull the feather forward to the desired length and post upright with more thread wraps.
Hi Jim,
Check the archives under “Wonder Wings.” Take care & …
