Hackle Free Zone

While we wait for sanity to prevail as REE says, you can sell all your saddles for hair salons then simply tie flies without hackle.

Franz Pott (1877-1956), a Montanan made woven flies that used the weaving material as wings.

Just a thought as you sell your saddle feathers for $2.50 each

ps: they want the really long feathers

Sounds like a plan. There’s always deer and elk hair, CDC, Snowshoe Hare’s foot, and foam too – lots of options for no hackle dry flies.

I’ve got an old Metz grizzly saddle that I’ve never used; going to dye it with some pink Koolaide and sell it for plane fair to Montana this summer;)

Scott

Scott, one step ahead, did that already for my air fair and spending $$. Better get on the “gravy train” while the horse is in the stable!

Where did you post your saddles for sale? I’ve got a few sitting around I wouldn’t mind selling.

Peddling the stuff on the streets like a fashion drug! LOL Just know some ladies and friends girlfriends or wives and asked them what they would be willing to pay!

I’m taking it a step farther - got both kids working their campuses and my wife has added it to her Mary Kay line. I’ll be driving a pink Tacoma before the year’s out.

When the feather hair issue first popped up on the board, I asked my 15 yr-old daughter about it. She was unaware of the trend.

Last week she reported the first of the girls in her school had gotten a feather weave (or whatever they call it).

I was hoping it would die before it came to Chicago.

I think I was one of the first to report about this trend?? But happily seeing it on a slight decline as of late!!!

Kendra was wearing feathers in her hair on Dancing With The Stars last night. There may be a resurgance among the older crowd.

You don’t have to weave to make a hair hackle wetfly.

Pott Stickers jamb the hair up against a bead to in order achieve much the same thing. Willy and Chris at the Troutfitters shop in Bozeman MT make synthetic hackle wet flies too, also with the same bead-jamb technique.

Now that you’ve brought this up…it makes me wonder if I couldn’t use a lump of foam instead of a bead, in
order to make a hair hackle dry fly.

Might have to call that one the Pott Licker…OK, here’s a first stab at a Pott Licker:

Not to get too far off topic, but who is Kendra?

I was talking to a fly shop owner the other day, they can’t get their saddle orders filled. I mentioned that it is only a fad and should fade away, he said that people are now feathering their show horses, dogs and cats as well. Some how a feather on a cat just ain’t right, or for that matter a good hunting dog wearing feathers. Sad thought.

Larry,

You’d think they’d go crazy trying to chew them off. I wonder how long before the fashionistas discover how many of those feathers go into flies like Flatwing Streamers, buy them up and strip them down for parts?

Scott

ScottP,

Yep - no different than a fly tyer buying a wool sweater and dismantling it sleeve by sleeve! Gantron sound familiar at all??

REE - Had to laugh! Saw the footage of Kendra on HULU and the first thing I noticed (honest!) was the saddle hackle!! Yeah, I know - gettin old(er)! I can hear the fans now: I wonder “who does her hackle”?? LOL!! A whole generation won’t know what V-Rib/ Krystal Flash/whip finisher/ or a Scud etc is, but they will know their HACKLE!! LOL!! Denny Conranch will be able to hire them as hackle graders! ROFLMAO!!!

Best regards, Dave S.
