Gurglers as Go To Fly!

All y’all LMB and Gill Guys, just tried size 6 yellow gurglers and WOW! Rama lama ding dong! Worked great even in cold water with North wind.

If ya aint tried 'em, I think you’re gonna like 'em!

What style were you using?

Greg, Ah, dunno?? Just small yellow gurgler, did not have much on it, tiny tail, yellow foam body and not much for legs, did however,

Work Great!

I like Gurglers for both fresh and salt water. I wouldn’t call them my go to fly but I use them a lot.
I tie mine up with a marabou tail over a bit of flash. I tie in the foam, then wrap the shank with some type of sparkle chenille, add two or three sets of legs before tying the foam down. White, Black, Brown and Orange work best around here. I’ll have to add a few yellow ones for next year. The top water bite is pretty much finished up here with water temps in the low to mid-50’s.
For salt water, I wrap the shank with an extra long estaz and usually don’t use legs.

What a simple, straightforward, productive fly it is.
I have had great success with Pete Frailey’s take on the Gurgler, the Gurgle-Pop.

Mark, whereabouts were you fishing?

Robin: fishing our company fish pond near Andrews, TX. Could not believe the action I got on this fly. Buddy right next to me fishing yellow popper was getting zippity do dah, and I am killing 'em.

Ain’t that weird?! They wanted it to gurgle, not to pop.

If the Rice Krispies people were fly fishers, would the logo would be Snap Gurgle 'N Pop?

I have been using Pete Frailey’s version Gurgle Pop version as my “go to” fly all through the late summer and fall. Black seemed to be the color that worked best on the gill and bass in the local lakes. They are just so durable. I had one tied in a size 8 that caught over 40 gills and 15 bass. After my last outing it was so tattered and torn I had to “retire” it. Out of respect for my “Old Faithful” gurgle pop I retied an identical on the exact same hook. Unfortunately “old faithful” met its match after a large swirl (bass?) broke my 3X tippet. At least I lost “old faithful” on a fish. A worth end to a faithful friend.

Caribe: where would one go to see a Gurgle Pop?

Here is a link to the tying instructions for the gurgle pop. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/121503fotw.html It is a real easy tie.

This is a really cool-looking foam fly. Thanks, Okieflyfisherman, for pasting in the photo.

To me, the most impressive feature are the thick rubber bands used for making the legs. Those legs have real “meat” and must be quite durable – unlike so many commercially-tied poppers and spiders that have hair-thin rubber strands that get torn away after just a couple of strikes.

Are these puppies commercially available under the “gurgle-pop” style name, or does a person have to tie their own?

“Better small than not at all.”

We have seen Northerns get to wanting gurgler…and MOSTLY gurglers, in the spring (the only time we get to fish’em  ).
So much so that WE had to change to get a fish while our partner was slaying’em.
…lee s.

I caught my first fish on a fly rod with a size 10 red and white gurgle pop i tied myself. the little bass was only about 6 inches but it was a lot of fun. i believe that these flies are not commercialy available, you have to tie them yourself like i do

Warm Water

Joe,

Just get one these guys to send you a few or maybe Peter will see this thread and send you some. They are cheaper than dirt (well, almost cheaper  but all the materials can be had at Wal-Mart) and easy to tie. I like them in size 8 or 10 (usually on a light wire Aberdeen) tied in individual colors of yellow, green chartreuse, and black. If they don’t send you some, just PM or e-mail me your postal addy and I’ll send you some.

Doh, I need to get to Walmart quick! I need funfoam!

What is the difference between a Gurgler, and a Gurgle-Pop?

What’s the difference. The way they’re tied, and how and where the foam is tied in.
I stick pretty much to gurglers. Gartsides’ original one uses three materials, foam, buck tail and hackle. Fairly easy to tie.
Tie in your tail material.
Cut a triangular piece of foam. About two or two and half times the length of the hook shank. Lay it on the top of the hook shank with the point facing the eye and wrap it down back to the bend.
Tie in the hackle at the bend, bring the thread forward to just behind the eye and wrap the hackle forward. Trim excess.
Now bring the foam forward over the hackle, pull tight and wrap down just behind the eye.
The width of the base determines the shape of the “head”, and normally I trim mine even with the hook eye.
I modified my version a bit. I use marabou over flash for the tail, and I’ve replaced the hackle with sparkle chenille, and add two or three pairs of legs depending on the size.

I’m not a big fan of taking an established pattern, adding your own twist on it, and calling it your own.
Gartside ties his gurglers many different ways. He has 21 versions for sale on his web site.

I believe the main difference is the G-P has rubber legs

Hello All,

Gurgle Pops are my go to fly from the beginning of warm weather when the gills move into the shallows until the winter weather drives them down deep and keeps them there. I tie all my Gurgle Pops according to FAOL instructions. I use (and give away) over a hundred each year in size #12. Cheap and effective----definitely Bang for the Buck! 8T
