I don’t build rods, but I have one in need of repair. It’s not a “high dollar” rod but it’s one my aunt gave me and I really want to keep it in good shape. The guides that are on it now are single-footed,ceramic ring type, I prefer snake guides and wondered if changing the style/type would have any adverse affect on the preformance of the rod. Also, the current/original guides were not thread-wrapped, but they’re attached with a wrap of composite tape and epoxy overlay. These tapes are brittle and cracking and one of the guides has recently lost its ceramic ring. Re-gluing is possible, but I really prefer the snake guides.
I’d put on what you like. I don’t really think changing guide styles is going to make much difference either way. Depending on what is on there, you could end up adding a little weight, but if you get the right snakes, you can drop the overall weight. Put on some good wire guides with thread, apply some finish and take it out fishing. Get rid of the tape either way. Thread is better.
This is an excellent chance to practice rodbuilding skills and see if it suits you. If you don’t want to, someone here would do it for you. I’d even do it for nothing more than material cost if you would like, but would still strongly encourage you to give it a try.
