Guide Suggestions for the Catskills

My brothers and I are planning a 1-2 day fishing trip for my father’s 70th birthday. Being the one who does the most fishing, I am thinking about a trip to the Catskills to do some fishing during May-June. There are four of us, and I thought that two guides would work out well. I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions of guides and places to stay. This place looks like a nice option.

West Branch Resort

Thanks.

Hi,
I know of a place in Roscoe, NY that offers accommodations, guiding service, fly shop, etc. Look at the link, below. It’s not exactly a “resort”, but if you like to fish, you’ll be right in a very historic spot. In addition there are other fly shops in Roscoe and in Livingston Manor, not far from there, is the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum.

I’ve used both and had a good experience with the Baxter House (stayed in the B&B, too). Pretty basic accomodations, but clean and functional. Good guide, too.

I had a horrendous experience with a guide (just a real %#$*&@!!) from West Branch, but when I explained to the owners what happened, they made it right, and that says a lot. I did not stay on their grounds. I’ll try them again just because they seemed to genuinely care about their customers’ experience. You’ve got to expect you’re going to get a rogue guide every once in a while, I guess. But, I’d be shocked if that guy’s still there.

Be sure to eat breakfast in the “World Famous” Roscoe Diner. Good Italian place, too… Raymundo’s?

My family has a long history with the area around Roscoe. My parents used to work at Lincoln Farm Camp in the early 1970’s and I was a camp brat for a few summers. I also went to college at SUNY Binghamton and we always used to stop at the Roscoe Diner on the way up the school. Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions.

Unless you’re looking for someone to float you in their boat on one of the bigger rivers, a guide is not necessary on the Beaverkill or Willowemoc. The fish are pretty easy to find and the wading isn’t difficult at all under regular water conditions.

I’ll second the Roscoe Diner and highly recommend Buffalo Zach’s too. I thought the food was better at Buffalo Zach’s and the goodies (cakes and pies) were way better at the diner.

I can’t help with someplace to stay as I use my camper up there.
