Guide Size

My guide chart calls shows regular size guides #2 & #3. I want to wrap with oversize guides. I will have to order the guides sight unseen. What sizes would you recommend that I order? Rod is a 10 ft 4 wt.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a sizing chart. I think that guides are on page 3.

Just a question. Why do you want to go with larger guides on a 4wt?

Dunfly,

I’m with you.

I see no benefit to using oversized guides. In fact, quite the reverse.

But it’s his rod, so whatever he wants is up to him. Some guys who fish in really cold weather, where freezing is an issue, think that larger guides help with this…

Tim,

3s and 4s should be plenty ‘big’ (I’ve used these on 12 weight big game rods).

Good Luck!

Are you considering single foot or double foot guides. What are you thinking about as far as stripper guides? FYI many of the Batson and St Croix charts show 2 & 3’s in single foot for 4wt rods. But in double foot I would step it down one size.

Thanks for the comments. I plan on using this rod to winter fish when freezing is an issue. That is my primary reason plus I have a couple of factory rods with oversized guides that seem to handle as well as my “normal” rods when fished in warmer weather. As far as the stripper guides I plan on ordering a #10 & #12 as per my chart. In fact as much goofing around as I do fixing used rods and buyng inexpensive blanks I decided to buy about a dozen each of sizes 2 through 6 guides plus some more strippers guides.

Once again FAOL members have responded with sage advice. Thanks again.
