I was at a fly fishing show a while back and one of the vendors had an absolutely beautiful grizzly saddle dyed olive colour. It was absolutely amazing in color, I should have bought it but didn’t since I usually tie Atlantic Salmon flies and olive is not that popular (the sizes on this saddle were in that #12-16 category anyway). Do any of you have a saddle like this and if so, what patterns do you tie with it. I did some googling and found some really nice dry flies for trout and am thinking I should go back to the vendor and pick it up.
I should have a couple more flies in my trout box, currently I have a yellow stimulator in size 10, 12 and 14, a size 16 black bead head nymph to use alone or as a dropper with the stimulator and muddlers in size 10, that is it. What should I add to the box that would be productive and use this new saddle that I am thinking I am going to pick up?
Im in Newfoundland, and I love the olive grizzly for wings on streamers. Although the saddle isnt as good for this purpose. Olive is a very productive colour here. I would use it for legs on nymph patterns. Take 1-3 wraps through the thorax before you pull over your wingcase.
Another note on the olive grizzly, I also use it for leggs on bass bugs. It is a great colour to have on hand.
k, i would use the olive hackle for streamers, and for wooly buggers, tie adams, bwo parachutes, p-tail nymphs, B-Creek nymphs, and some more stimmies, and i think that you would be doing pretty good.
Dwight: I use Whiting saddles I dyed olive for use here in Newfoundland. They work well for dries for Brookies. I haven’t yet tried them on Browns and Rainbows but intend to try them this season…Frank
