I am starting to tie up some Green Drakes and the recipe calls for porcupine quills. Does anybody know a source or a substitute. Sure don’t want to go off in the woods chasing porcupines.
Depends how traditional you are. I tie mine with extended foam bodies.

all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim
Are you sure it’s not Porcupine Guard Hair ?
Northwoods,
I’ve tied extended bodied flies with porky quills. You can use them for any of the larger mayflies. If done properly you can get a nice body and lightweight fly by using shortshank hooks. Anyway, I’ve plenty of quills and will mail you a bunch if you drop me an email with your mailing address.
Here’s a link to a Coffin Fly tied with porky quill.
