Green Drake Wulff (sorta) SBS

Here’s a 1st shot at a Green Drake Wulff. Didn’t have any dun calf-tail or green-dyed grizzly hackle, so I fudged stuff a bit. A bit rough, need to tie a few more to get it right.

hook - Tiemco 5212 #10
thread - UTC 140 olive/brown
tail - moose body
wing - deer hair dun
body - rabbit olive
rib - 1 strand embroidery floss yellow
hackle - olive and grizzly mixed

Part 1

mash barb and start thread at 75% mark

cut a good sized clump of deer hair; clean, stack and measure for length (hook shank); I don’t usually start at the wing, but with deer hair, calf tail, etc it leaves a big bump at tie-in; it’s easier to tie the tail in afterwards and create a smooth body

place hair on top of shank; 2 soft loops on top of each other

pull bobbin firmly towards you allowing hair to flair (but not spin); take a few more very firm wraps, pull butts up and cut at an angle

add a drop of Crazy glue to the stub and apply more thread wraps to anchor and smooth, then move in front of hair, pull up and apply thread dam to set wing upright

divide hair to create 2 even clumps

take 3 wrap between clumps, front to back

then 3 wraps back to front

wrap around base of near wing clump

3 or 4 more firm wraps to create “post”

Part 2

take 1 wrap behind both wings (helps lock the near wing in place) and then repeat process on far wing

take a wrap behind wings (helps lock the far wing in place); coat base and posts with a little cement

front view

take thread back to position above hook barb

take a clump of moose body hair, clean, stack, measure for length (hook gap) and tie down

trim tail clump at wing butt junction

smooth body with thread wraps; anatomically, the tail’s probably a bit longer than the natural, but this is a big bug in need of some support

tie in floss rib

dub body (maybe a bit too bright green?)

wrap ribbing forward

Part 3

prep hackle, tie feathers in front of wing, between wings

wind hackle, make it heavy (4 wraps behind, 6 in front per feather)

trim hackle, tie off, add Sally and you’re done; wing’s probably about 1/2 a hook eye diameter too far back, but at least I didn’t crowd the eye (which I almost always do on a first fly)

front view

The deer hair wing kinda gets lost in the hackle; need to find a good dun-dyed calftail.

Scott

very nice fly ties, as always.

That should stay on top going down Niagara Falls. Nice tye.
