Larry or anyone who might know.

I have a question about the bodies of the flies in this article this week.

I am wondering how you tie the peacock herl part of the body. It does not look like the herl was tied in and wrapped up the shank directly. It looks like it might have been spun with the thread before wrapping, but I am not sure.

Any input?

looks like either way will produce the herl body

tied in and wrapped forward

tied in and wrapped around thread and wrapped forward

Larry has had some computer problems of late, and that’s why he hasn’t responded here.
I’ll try to get the question to him, though he hasn’t responded to me lately either. We’ll try to get an answer on this.

I always wrap the herl around the tying thread before wrapping the hook. It adds a lot of strength to the herl and prevents the herl from tearing when a fish strikes. Best Regards…

same here. I combine my herl with the thread and wrap it forward togther

Yup. Wrapping the herl around the thread makes life a lot easier on the water.

I tried one of these, but with yellow, last night and I just could not get the nice cigar shaped body that Larry has here. Man I like the look of that fly.
