Great Fly of the Week

I really enjoyed that, it filled in all the gaps in Lefty’s instructions. Not that I’ll be fishing them anytime soon but that looks so fun to tie I think I’ll make a few. Thanks Richard.

Hey you are welcome Benjo.

These Big Deceivers are of fun to construct. It takes a while with all of the steps; so I build them assembly line-style. First I have a hackle stripping and pairing session, next a hackles to hook and CA operation on the batch. Next time at them I usually add the flash tails and then finally go the rest of the way on them one at a time from there. You really don’t get a sense of the stature of these big flies until the last step is completed. So that is a reward in itself.

Thanks for the note!
Rich

Love the tying instructions and I hope that it will make my own Deceiver flies look nicer, even though mine are all tied between 4"-6" long instead of the size shown. Mine catch fish but do not look nearly that nice.
I would really love to see more on the use of tapering scissors to trim up the fly. In that way I could beter understand that step since I have never seen or hear of that step being done.

Thanks for the great instructions on what looks like a really super fly. I can hardly wait to downsize it to a 3/0 and use it for suspended LMB, hyrids, and stripers. Great Fly! 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

Thanks Eight Thumbs! The beauty of Lefty’s fly is that is can be scaled up or down to suit the fishes. Keeping the proportions of the fly in check as it is re-sized is what takes a little effort.

Glad you like the BIG example…

Your barber probably uses tapering scissors-right?

Small pair is the Anvil “Super Taperizer”, and Larger pair is their “Ultimate Taperizer” (used in the FOTW Example).

The above scissors are from a manufacture called Anvil. Check the sponsors pages here as most every fly shop has these, or can certainly get them for you. They are not cheap at $20.00 or so…but a great tool non the less.

Just get a pair of “Taperizers” and practice on the neighbors Irish Setter first and then your flies!

Seriously-the only trick to making a smooth, blended tapor with these is to make a cut, move the scissors down a half inch, cut again, and so forth until the collar fades away…just like a nice haircut. Keep them moving!

Hope this helps on that count.

Thanks,
Rich

Thanks Flymaker2 for the information. Might have to be one of the things I look for at my local flyshop in the next week or so. Have to go spend my gift certificate from there anyways.
