Briney dave drove to Canton this morning. Unfortunately, we were unable to fish “The Factory”, but we settled in to “Lee’s Pond” & did quite well. MANY gills, almost all of which were over 9". Dave caught the vast majority, as I always hope my guests will. Here are 12 of the pics from today…
Here’s Dave with a nice gill he took on my 2wt6
His 1st gill of the day
A dandy 'gill & a visit from 1 1/2 yr old “Buddy”…note the muddy paws…Buddy helped us fish!
Fish caught on woolly worms, foam spiders, foam beetles, stealth bombers, & honeybugs…Dave used ONLY the yellow/grizzly woolly worm.
Beautiful day!
Mike
Mike, thanks so much for having me out east. Those ponds are amazing!
Anyone who has been lucky enough to fish with Mike knows that he is the best host you could ever have the pleasure to fish with.
Selfless and generous, plus maker of fine beef jerky.
I only feel bad that I can not return the favor, there are no ponds that I know of in the flat part of the state that would even equal a pale shadow of those ponds.
The thing I might be able to do is take you to a private section of the Sandusky for the white bass run in the spring. It is closed during the walleye spawn but the owner said that I should be able to fly cast there fine. I could not make it out this spring due to time and weather never matching up but will check it out as the season opens next year and let you know.
In the mean time, I sure hope we can meet up again to fish. It does not matter at all to me where or when as I enjoyed fishing with you enough to stand over a plastic pool with snoopy rods. I am sure we would still have a great time LOL:D
plus I can toss in some good bbq ribs to chew on between fish
Mike seems your at it again, some one else who calls you friend…
Great looking gills!!!
Thanks for the report, I was wondering if you guys went, glad you did and also glad you and Dave had a great day…
Dave…The “payback” was watching you enjoy yourself & catch quality fish, but I sure couldn’t turn down smoked ribs, white bass, & maybe a lesson or 2 about “creating” some dry rubs. We WILL fish again…heck, there are 3 good ponds (including The Factory) & a couple streams we still need to put you on.
Glad you enjoyed the day buddy. We sure did get into a few 'gills, didn’t we?
Tim, Joe, & 8T…The wedding July 25th has me juggling time, but you guys know that we’ll put something together. The ponds I fish ARE “fair to middlin’”.
Dave…Again, thanks for enriching a good day into a great day. That’s what friends do!
Mike
Fish caught on woolly worms, foam spiders, foam beetles, stealth bombers, & honeybugs…Dave used ONLY the yellow/grizzly woolly worm, which is my “go to” 'gill fly. I caught plenty on the others.
Oh yeah, ALL were caught, photo’d, & released.
Mike
I only used one pattern; it was a slightly modified wooly worm. With most pan fish there are a ton of good patterns, wooly and bright, or you can match what is around. I don’t have a ton of fly fishing experience but I think anything that is at least sort of buggy will get the job done.
Mike, I will be glad to share a couple good rub mixes with you. And I very much look forward to our next time on the water
The waters in the shadows of that power plant that has given men the ability to count to 12 and a half without taking off a shoe? The waters that have given Timex Indiglo watches perpetual life and blinding light?
YOU MEAN THAT FACTORY? Where you can use musky flies and road kill to catch a bluegill?
If the gills at the factory are bigger than Lee’s I think I am going to have to tie up some tarpon patterns
I thought Mike was joking when he brought chairs and said “you will want to take a break or two” But there is a point where you just get tired and want a cold “soda” and sit in the shade for a little while.
Sean…Dat be da place!!!
I keep telling you to get down here…What’s Saturday looking like? Maggie & Colleen have another wedding shower…I THINK I’m free…call me!
Dave…Yep, the gills at The Factory ARE bigger than at Lee’s. Something to look forward to, hunh?
Mike
Just noticed your first post and wanted to extend a welcome from SE Idaho - from a trout guy who much enjoys reading about the warm water fishing you guys do back there in the midwest.
Another BB member from Olathe - home of the current national spelling bee champion, and our very own Betty Hiner !!
If you don’t know Betty, you are in for a real treat !! If I was you, I’d be sending a PM asking for a personal audience with her ?? Man, the chance to talk humming bird flies and NO trouts from S.D. in person …
John
Oh yeah - Mikey - great thread and some super pics. Looking forward to more.
