Don’t know how come it turned out the way it did… But I went to a local area stream today, very close to town, it was a very humid day, no one fishing at all. Folks say fishing is off cause of no rain and heat. i went anyway, took my cane, waded out in the little stream, saw some fish hitting the top,( little fish, dang creek chubs I thought) I wanted to catch anything on my cane rod just to feel the fish on. Creek chub would do. I cast a fly I had been tying today and new worked well with the local creek fish, (chubs, smallmouth, and perch) no luck. Dang I wasn’t gonna let no creek chub skunk me. Switched to dry flies, 14 march brown, first hit, cast up stream, Dang nice chub i thought, brought to hand a pretty little rainbow YES!!! Next hook up, much larger fish that was indeed a fighter, felt great on the cane, a very nice Fat brown, Wow, i just stood there after the release and looked around to see if any one was around, cause i was like did ya see that…lol Then another rainbow larger than the first, wow and to think I was just gonna not go, cause there ain’t no trout there anyway, and it was way to hot to mess with creek chubs, turns out, ya never know…
Tim,
You DOG!!!..and I had to work. Glad you had a great time, even though I’m jealous.
BTW, good talkin’ to ya today.
Mike
Mike lol, the fly I tried first was the one I caught the brookie on when you and I was fishing up in the moutains 2 years ago, that’s the fly I was tying today when you called, it also works very well for warm water fish,(chubs, smallmouth perch) The reason i decided to go was I got a e-mail from my brother in Iraq, I had sent him one telling him about the last couple outings I had and had ended up catching warm water fish, and also told him about me tying fly’s. His said “sounds like Paradise to me, so are you just gonna sit around tying fly’s?” After talking with you and him, I thought now heres my brother in a war zone in heat that won’t quit. I’m going to go out and Enjoy what I do have and I could see his point of view Thinking what i wrote him must sound like Paridise. I’v never had a trout day work like that one. Everything was just right from the rod, ( I wasn’t gonna use the cain cause I save that just for trout) the reel, (you know where that came from) to the fly. (the fmarch brown was one I tyed in 1996 witch has a story of it’s on) I was in the shade from the heat, there was no brush in the way, All hook ups was made with a dry fly cast up stream into the ripples, I had one rainbow jump out of the water, I could go on, lol longer than I already have… It was just a great day…
PS: Thanks for the phone call my friend…
Fantastic Tim… I would be jealous but you deserve a break. By the way, you only get lucky like that if you go out enough and clock up the bad days too, so well done and I wish I was there.

Tim,
Does your brother fly fish? If he does, we’re gonna have to get him to the VA Fly Fishing Festival when he gets home. If not, we’re gonna have to work on him!
Keep having those great days!
Mike
Mike, well no he doesn’t, but, in his last couple of e-mail’s he’s been wanting to go. He grew up kinda like I did, hunting and fishing, out door guy. But has never fly fished. But now I think he’s at the point of wanting to try it. Yeah that festival would be a good place to start’em out. I think he would like it alot. He’s getting married Nov. 15, and his girl is an all around good southern Carolina girl who likes the out doors as well, maybe we can start’em both out …
Oh and hey Gringo, hop a plane and come on up here to the festival with us, Mike and I will buy ya dinner…
Maybe one day, Mike and I will come down your way, ya never know, that would be one cool trip…
Tim,
That sounds good. Looks like a vacation trip is “out” for us next year due to Maggie’s wedding, BUT I DO plan on the annual Virginia trip to get together with you to fish & attend the Festival…and, of course, to work with Jerry too. We’ll get your brother hooked on fly fishing for sure! We’ll also look forward to getting together with George, Wayne & other FAOLers in 2009 too.
Mike
Grubby, you have no idea how tempted I am.
Grubb,
I was out your way last monday (Labor Day) but fished the other side of the hill. Water was a bit low but water temps were ideal (mid-high 50s)…did real well with the Specks despite the crowds.
Saw a li’l copperhead down there right by the trail…ballsy bastages, those guys. Almost had a hand-on-snake encounter with one in June deep down the canyon on White Oak…
Let’s meet up sometime if time permits…I usually get out to the SNP once a week if the water’s there.
Marty
Hey Marty,
Don’t rule out getting to the VA Fly Fishing Festival in the Spring. It’s a great time & Tim ALWAYS has a special fishin’ hole lined up…I sure haven’t been disappointed!
Mike
Hey Marty, the White Oak canyon is a grand place, the water falls, glad you and that copper didn’t hook up…lol the little hike down to the Rapidan by the cabin is grand as well.
The festival sound’s like a good time to get together, I’m sure everyone that attend’s would enjoy very much a little guided trip. I am learning more and more the vast amout of fishing thats here…
Guys,
I do plan on attending next spring. This year we had an unintended trip some up last minute…
Anyhow I frequent the SNP very regularly and have gotten to know her waters pretty well. Was out on Saturday in the central east slope area and did very well. Planning on fishing a stream very near WOC tomorrow - will provide report and pics!
