Went fishing yesterday with Mike Murgida, & today with old fishin’ buddy Gary. Yesterday, Mike & I hit a bonanza of solid 9"+ gills. I got mostof mine on a yellow with grizzly hackle wooly worm (tied by our own Anglerdave), & young Mike snatched one of my hoppers to get most of his. I haven’t hit large gills hitting like that in years. I decided to get out the 7 wt Orvis I got from Dotman & try for bass…1st cast with a white sneaky pete (tied by James Smith) was NAILED by yet another big gill. I would guess the hook size was a 4, if not larger. Once I figure out how to load pictures, I will. Today was at another pond. Only got 4 gills & a few bass, but the crappie surprised me…got 8 of 'em on the wooly worm, foam beetle, & a #8 green popper…go figure!

Good on ya Mike! Wish I was there, water’s a little to cold up here for the Gill’s to start bedding. Did catch my first ever on a woolyworm though!! Going to have to fish them more!
Don’t forget the Michigan Fish-In August 14th to the 20th. The Holy Water’s of the Au Sable await you!!
Sounds like a great day. I think is days like the one you discribed that keep us dreaming in the winter and salivating in the spring. Congratulations on having a day to remember.
Jim,
The big surprise was the gill that hit the sneaky pete you had tied…young Mike Murgida kept saying he just couldn’t believe a gill would ever hit a fly that big. LOL!

Hey tuber, your incident with the sneaky pete doesn’t sound so odd. I was fishing a local pond the other day and I had a bluegill try to slam a big huge 1/0 bass popper. The poor 'gill got his head punctured…those fish can be mean!
