We’re in a severe drought, and the water is way down at Lake Manatee. But I decided to head out this morning anyway. Places where I normally fish are dry.
But I found an area that was holding fish. I caught a few early on poppers, then switched to my No. 12 bead head nymph.
End up with 40 bluegill, a couple of big shellracker, several stumpknocker, golden shiners and seven bass – all on 1-weight.
It was good to get out.

Looks like a good day to me, that second gill was’nt messing around!
Probably good that’s not a bamboo rod as a #1 weight should be matched with a range of flies from #20-#28 ! The term chuck & duck would take on a new meaning of getting out of the way of sharp cane points & edges:shock: With the winds bringing mini-whitecaps on the lake across the street , the #4 weight is in the rod rack:cool:
Your redear are darker than the ones I catch here. Nice fish and good to see one. Haven’t caught one since we moved from our first home on a lake some 23 years ago.
Now…what is that third fish? Is it a “stumpknocker” or a golden shiner? I’ve never seen one like it. Bear in mind I’ve never fished the south.
