My Bride and I are going on vacation later this month.
We have had to amend our plans to go to Nova Scotia due to a bit of unforseen circumstaces .
It’s still good though , in that we are going to be up in Vermont (Northernwestern of course). Seeing the folkes , a bit of sight seeing and what not.
From there over to the coast of Maine for as much fresh from the boat lobster and little neck steamers as we can stand (and that can at times be way to much) and then just putz around.
Problem being that none of my family still fly fishes and even worse ( we can chose our friends) don’t trout fish !!!
Sorry for the shameless confession about my family but what can be done ?
They wont recant , reform or repent (I went cat fishing today with a spinning rod , but hey! its me so its okay ) .
So I just have to admit that my family isnt perfect.
My real problem is that while in Vt, my wife and I still want to trout fish and I dont have a lead on any place to go.
Sure, there’s the Conneticut river ( too big and no boat) , the Willoughby (too crowded) , the Winooski is a good posibility (no clue which section) . Is there anybody on the board that is familiar with the Vermont trout streams?
All of my knowledge is 35 years out of date or hearsay .
Any heads up , advice (except about my maladjusted family ) or general information would be greatly appreciated. I have all the gear we need to bring (including the motorcycles which will be going too) so thats not an issue .I just have that clueless thing still going on.
Thankyou,
I havent looked yet , just got on the board. I will most certainly check all leads.
I cant believe that I have to say that anything abut me is 35 years old any thing!!!
Can I be this old already?
Oh well .
In spite of myself here I am .
Perch,
when you get back, please post and let us know how it all went. my sister wants us to visit her in VT, and fishing would be a big attraction. we went once in August two years ago, but there was no water anywhere–hope it’s better this year!
I am much more familiar with southern Vermont but here are a few rivers in the north worth checking out:
The Lamoille; the Missisquoi; the Clyde and you already mentioned the Connecticut. As for section I’d dig out a map and look for tributaries that are cooling the main stretch; since you are going in late summer some of the water may be fairly warm.
Since you are going to Vermont I wouldn’t leave out a visit to the Battenkill. It’s probably a few hours from where you will be staying. It’s not what it was 35years ago despite the groups that are trying to improve things but it is still a great river. You can just follow route 313 out of Arlington and the road follows the river. There are numerous pulloffs. Terrestrials are the name of the game if you go during the midday in late July. The early AM has a Trico hatch. [CLEAN YOUR GEAR AFTERWARDS - THE BATTENKILL HAS DITMO AND WE DON’T WANT IT SPREAD]
If you do go to the Battenkill be sure to visit the American Museum of Fly Fishing which is in Manchester. It’s directly across from the main Orvis store on OLD Route 7. (I think it’s called 7A now but I haven’t looked at the road signs for years…)
The Orvis rod making factory is there too - they give free tours if you are interested in that kind of thing. It’s never crowded and would probably be just you and your bride. The tour is given by one of the rod making craftsman. It used to be scheduled for 9AM every weekday but call first to be sure.
All of the above being said your best trout fishing may be in the small brooks/streams in the area you are staying. Vermont is loaded with them and they have native Brookies. An 8 incher is a monster. When you get in town, go to the local store to buy your license, buy a few flies etc. and ask the owner where to go.
