Going Chinese

Joe, that is part of the reason why I try to get you to take two rods out. You can change flies in a big hurry that ways.

Also if neither fly works then you can change both at the same time.

I just had to pick on you as we did not get together to fish this year.

Rick

Hey Rick,

The idea of a second fly rod actually came to mind after I hooked that stupid grass carp; I maybe could have laid down the grass carp rod and resumed fishing for 'gills and redears using the backup rod.

This year isn’t over yet. I still want to come up and go fishing with you, and I hope to make it. This summer it was always so hot and muggy. Recently the weather’s been a bit nicer – not much nicer yet, though.

It’s been impossible lately to get loose for an entire weekend due to a string of fundraiser band gigs I’m playing in that are related to Hurricane Katrina. Still two more of those gigs to go.

What do you want to bet that during the next month we will see some good action as Midwest panfish start bulking up for winter?

Rick and Joe

I sure hope the action picks up as they start to bulk up. I have not gone too much over the last few weeks due to a minor accident. (I butted heads with my youngest and lost. His 2 year old head was MUCH harder than my old teeth, so I have been spending too much time with the dentist instead of fishing.) I have been seriously hoping to get some good fishing in before the Pheasant season opens, and then after scaring some of them, get back to fishing a (hopefully) nice fall.

Don

P.S. Liked the story Joe. You shoulda boated the Carp and removed it from the lake. At least I would have. But then, I tend to remove all carp unless there is a reason not to.

Hey Rick,

I fish 100 percent from a small bass
boat with forward stick steering, controls,
and trolling motor. Everything is at hand,
including TWO rigged fly rods at all times.
All too often a missed stike will not go
for the same fly again. The other rod
produces a lot of my fish. If I miss him
on top water, he’s got a wet fly in his
face before he knows whats happening.G
Warm regards, Jim

Fish are starting the fall feed here.

I have been taking athrid rod for a while with a midge pattern as a dropper on it.
Catches alot of fish.

Rick

Rick,

If you don’t mind me asking, what size midge do you favor when you’re using a dropper, and what size tippet do you like for that midge?

For that matter, what surface fly do you like “dropping” a midge from? If these are personal secrets that you’d rather keep to yourself, I certainly understand and forget I asked.

I think that the times I’ve used a midge I worked it too fast. I usually catch a few fish, but it’s nothing like the kind of luck you consistently have.

The few times I’ve tried midges, it was as a trailing fly (not a dropper). I used a 6X tippet connector link, which is 3-lb. test if memory serves. Maybe something even lighter is the best way to go?

I use a foam fly of some sort to drop the midge off from. The midges goe from size 16 to 22. JUst depends on the day and what works.

I cast it out and let it set. It is legal to use two rods in Iowa. I cast with one of the others.
