For me it’s a 6wt 2017,7’1" Lee Wulff replica rod. The short length is ideal for tight places on shoreline and works well fishing from a kayak. It also throws a lot of line for it’s size!

Mostly it depends on our mood at the time. Like most, we have WAY too many toys that need to be used, at least occasionally, to justify their ownership!

has anyone ever tried an elkhorn western series? im thinking of a 7’6" 3wt. for bream fishing here in mississippi. any advice would be helpful
Check out the diversity. That’s what I love about this sport, one simple question–thirty different answers and every one of them the right one!
For me it’s my 8’ 4wt Scott V2. Spends more time in my hand than any rod I own.
Littlfish or little waters I use my Eagle Claw 6’6" Fiberglass rated up to 5wt.
Good size panfish and bass it’s my Flueger 7’6" 4wt graphite.
Big fish like carp it’s my Hobbss Creek 9’ 7wt
bluegills=7’ 3wt
bass/trout/carp on a windy lake=g.loomis gl3 9’ 6wt
bass on a non windy day=9’ 5wt
Trout, sunnies, perch=St croix 4 wt
Big water or Bass=Pflueger 6 wt
That is my entire inventory. Fished in 30 MPH wind yesterday with the 6 and it managed (barely).
8’ 5wt ![]()
Jim,
Since you specified that readers consider panfish and small bass as our quarry, too, then my go-to rod would be the 00-wt. Sage TXL.
Bear in mind, though, that I prefer an ultralight rod because I fish from a canoe most of the time (which lets me pull fish AWAY from many shoreline snags).
But also, on the “smaller streams” you specify it has been my (limited) experience that a shorter fly rod is useful due to the presence of overhanging limbs that interfere with your natural casting stroke? Accidentally whack one of those limbs – even a twig – and the blow fractures your rod; thus using a shorter rod reduces this hazard to a certain degree.
If I mostly fished off the bank or waded out from the shoreline I’d probably go with a longer, somewhat stronger rod, like most others here are using. I own a couple of such rods in the event, and have used both since the recent burglary theft of my Sage.
Whatever rod each of us prefers, I offer a few words to the wise:
DON’T FORGET TO CLOSE YOUR GARAGE DOOR AT NIGHT

Am I reading this right? Your Sage was stolen! Maybe I ought to come down your way and we’ll hunt down the dirty rotten scoundral.

Dan Craft blank zero weight overlined with one weight WFF Orvis line. Then my Cabelas Clear Creek one weight overlined with two weight el cheapo line. Third up is the two weight built on a Batson blank.
If it ever got just insane with big fish I might have to get out the three weights or even the four weight.

Scoundrels actually (as in, plural). Three suspects: one get-away driver, two males seen leaving my yard on foot. More on this later.
Dang it I did not see that post Joe! Man oh man that is bad news! I am so sorry!
It would be sweet indeed if the perps were captured.
