Actually, that is the problem, It’s called carrying capacity. The problem is that most people are afraid to admit it. If the earths population were half what it currently is we wouldn’t be having this discussion about burning fossil fuels, or depleting our fisheries, or that we’ve destroyed 99% of the native prairies in the USA.
I digress. If you think things are crowded now, think about this, current estimates project that the world’s population will double again in the next 54-72 years. Chew on this, if we cut the worlds per capita carbon output in half, we will be in the same situation 60 years from now that we are today, if nothing else changes.
So do I get a carbon credit for my fiberglass & bamboo rods??
Just remember how much doing something “just in case” will cost. Higher food prices related to higher corn & ethanol prices are just the beginning of overall higher prices associated with implementation of Gore Gobbledygook. I was listening to an Australian scientist the other day who was attending a Global Warming conference in NY. Their research in Australia determined that in order to meet Australia’s carbon reduction goals and actually SEE a result and reduction; driving needs to be reduced by 80% and air travel would become an annual event.
Are you ready for that type of lifestyle change, “just in case Al’s right?” Sorry but I don’t want to go back to the 19th Century based on a theory.
All I can tell you is hold on to your wallet. Gas, oil and everything else will be going way UP if the “carbon taxers” get their way.
Adhering to my lifelong* (almost) personal policy, of not debating an unwinnable issue, I withhold
comment, however, Bamboozle, although it may not/does not accurately represent my hidden opinion, I love your closing, “As for me, I’m with Rhett Butler!”. I will use it.

PS: * since once upon a time , while driving, I met, midspan on a single lane bridge…
Since we all know the earth has had many cycles of heating and cooling, I’d like to know what the optimal temperature for the planet is, anyway…
Further, I’d like to know why I should believe someone’s forecast for the next 100 years, when they can’t come close to telling me what’s going to happen 3 days from now with any degree of accuracy.
And if man is the cause of global warming, how do you explain this?
This is a recent Story; The Weather Channel has lost its way, according to John Coleman, who founded the channel in 1982.
Coleman told an audience at the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change on March 3 in New York that he is highly critical of global warming alarmism.
?The Weather Channel had great promise, and that?s all gone now because they?ve made every mistake in the book on what they?ve done and how they?ve done it and it?s very sad,? Coleman said. ?It?s now for sale and there?s a new owner of The Weather Channel will be announced ? several billion dollars having changed hands in the near future. Let?s hope the new owners can recapture the vision and stop reporting the traffic, telling us what to think and start giving us useful weather information.?
The Weather Channel has been an outlet for global warming alarmism. In December 2006, The Weather Channel?s Heidi Cullen argued on her blog that weathercasters who had doubts about human influence on global warming should be punished with decertification by the American Meteorological Society.
Coleman also told the audience his strategy for exposing what he called ?the fraud of global warming.? He advocated suing those who sell carbon credits, which would force global warming alarmists to give a more honest account of the policies they propose.
?[i] have a feeling this is the opening,? Coleman said. ?If the lawyers will take the case ? sue the people who sell carbon credits. That includes Al Gore. That lawsuit would get so much publicity, so much media attention. And as the experts went to the witness stand and testified, I feel like that could become the vehicle to finally put some light on the fraud of global warming.?
Earlier at the conference Lord Christopher Monckton, a policy adviser to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, told an audience that the science will eventually prevail and the ?scare? of global warming will go away. He also said the courts were a good avenue to show the science.
Stuart James and Paul Detrick also contributed to this report.
End Quote.
In my opinion, the Press has used “Global Warming” as a “Hot Topic” to draw attention to the TV & Newspaper News. If the earth warms or cools, there isn’t anything we can do about it. The integrity of the Press has eroded and they are desperate for anything to boost their ratings.

Dosent the new temp data (released last week) show that the earth has reversed 100years of global warming in the last 12 months? (1 degree temp drop globaly) here is one of my fav PooPoo on GW sites its all facts no pondering. http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/ice_ages.html
Also has any one ever asked why they (the GW crowd) only uses the temp graph that starts at 1800. Was there a climate before that? Was it colder? Was it warmer? I know the answer. But Im not a sheep I like to find my own answers instead of regurgitate the one the media dindongs force feed me. also one of my fave you tubes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXrc1XZayp4
Yea historically it has been much warmer and much colder. In fact most of the northern hemisphere was covered by one HUGE sheet of ice. Fishing must have really s***ed back then;).
My main problem with the global warming debate is the use of single point facts on both sides to ‘support’ an argument, and then deride the other side for using junk science when both are doing the same thing. Things like Hurricane Katrina in support of global warming or the fact the West has had a ton of snow this winter or MN is colder than average against it. Both a bunch of hooey as far as worthwhile supporting data.
Do schools even teach the scientific method anymore? I seem to remember being introduced to in somewhere around 5th grade, but nobody seems familiar with it anymore. I seemingly read constant examples of ‘science’ that seem to have nothing to do with science. Hot button topic for me because it’s seemingly everywhere, not just in the global warming ‘debate’.
Ok, take a deep breath, breeeeaathe…
And with regard to this much ballyhooed and hyped ‘inevitable hydrogen economy’ - where’s all this supposedly easily plentiful hydrogen going to come from?
Yes, and each and every one of the things you mentioned has its place in nature and its contribution to the natural world is exactly as it should be. Walk through the woods someday and try to feel what is the most natural thing and what is the most un-natural thing. Tell me where you fall into those things. Now tell me which thing does not belong. All things of this earth belong on this earth. Again who is to say this in not all a part of a much greater plan? We are so arrogant. To think we can pick and choose which of the elements of the natural world are more important then any other. Some times I wonder why we were given the ability to reason.
Grew up in New Hampshire, fell through the ice one winter when I was about 12 years old and had to walk about 3/4 of a mile to get to the house, darn near didn’t make it, and walked (1/4 mile) to the school bus stop once when it was 38 below zero.
Live in KY now and “I LOVE GOBAL WARMING!” Wish we had more of it! Wish Al Gore would just plain go away, because I’m afraid someone might take him serious and slow down the “warming up.” I’M STILL COLD, and temperature increases of “1/10 of 1 degree a year” just ain’t cutting it!!!
I’ll worry about GW when I see T-Rex go after my neighbor’s dog. No let me re-phrase that; I’ll worry about GW when I see T-Rex “get” my neighbor’s dog.
Keep this thread going - it’s actually kind of interesting!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE global warming. Streams were so low last year, I figure if I let my car idle long enough, the polar caps will melt; raise the oceans; drain into the the streams; fish are happy; so am I. Greenhouse gases will bring more acid rain - that should help raise the PH levels a little. Heck…think of it…CANADA WOULD BE A REAL TOURIST DESTINATION!! USA WOULD BE A TROPICAL PARADISE! I COULD FISH THE AUSABLE IN NY, AND THERE WOULD BE PALM TREES!!!
Everybody would have to wear hats…that means all the goofy ones I’ve got…WILL TOTALLY BE IN STYLE!! SWEEET!
Imagine…BONEFISH IN THE MISSISSIPPI!!! TARPON IN LAKE ONTARIO!!!
Scientists say the earth is over 2.5 Billion years old. According to geologists the earth has had periods of both super-heated temperatures as well as ‘Ice Ages’. These have, according to some of the reports, have lasted 10s of thousands of years and have been caused from many natural acts, i.e. cooling magnum, shifts in the earths crust above and below water, volcanic activity, collisions with asteroids, even the eliptical orbit of the earth around the sun. Now we’re being preached to, yes it’sbeginning to sound like a religion, that WE have the power to alter the course of geologiccal history! Well, we(Humans) weren’t around when all the changes in the last 2.5 Billion years (give or take a few million) took place. Yet they did.
Carbon Off-Sets, my a**. It’s just a novel way to create the ultimate fear and futility but, and here’s the big $$$ gimmick, you pay or donate money to offset putting CO2 in the air by placing creating natural CO2 destroyers. The financial payoff to Gore & Associates, is that they get fees for this endeavor. As I understand it, Gore and his associates are being sued for fraud. When this whole thing is investigated and the ‘scientists’ render their ‘expert’ opinions, there’ll be more statements with ‘qualifiers’ than anything else. ‘Qualifiers’ = If, May, Should, Could, Might, Perhaps, etc.
Thanks for asking. This probably isn’t do-able, but you got to admit my heart is in the right place. What if I said, if everybody made an effort and “tried” to plant one tree every year, would that make more sense?
I plant one or two trees every year, but that has been on my own property, and that’s coming to an end soon because of room. Most people won’t do that because they don’t want to mow around them. And I can’t say I blame them it’s not fun and there’s a lot of leaves to deal with in the fall.
When I was in the boy scouts (1950’s), as a troop, we would plant “hundreds” of white pine trees in the forest after logging operations cleared out of an area. I understand that is now being done by the responsible loggers.
Another thing that folks who own wooded areas can do, and I have done this on a friend’s farm, is to pick out the healthiest trees and make sure they have a clear growth area. That way you may end up with fewer trees but the ones you have are much healthier. Crowded woods just kill off small trees and the ones that do make it into the air are usually very thin and spindly until they kill off the smaller trees beside them. We just figure we are killing the ones that would loose the fight to survive anyway. Don’t take that as gospel, it’s just what us “shade tree” planters have noticed. Maybe there’s a tree expert on the board who can weight in here.
One last thing that may be do-able, (in other states that is); In KY a friend and I looked into getting a permit to plants trees along the interstate highways. We wanted to plant a few different types of nut trees which would be pleasing to the eye “and” produce a product for the small animals. As you know the Interstates chew up a lot of real estate, and in some places there is a “lot” of green space between the lanes in the median. What better place to let some trees loose. But the KY DOT said they didn’t want the liability of letting people roam all over their “right-of-way.” I really think they didn’t want their mowing zone messed with, but we didn’t get the permit/permission anyway.
But I’ll bet a dime to a donut, if most people “really” tried they could find a place to plant a tree now and then.
