Glanrhos Soft Hackles

A variation of the traditional spiders, not very new.
The Glanrhos, look on my web site.

Donald,

I like that style of soft hackle. First time I’ve seen it. I’ll be tying some of my old favorites that way. Look forward to seeing your dressings and recipes.

The thing to remember is that it is meant for a emerger with the wing and legs similar colours.
I first read about them in Sylvester Nemes ‘Soft-hackled Fly Imitations’ but I only recently bought Roger Woolley’s ‘Modern Trout Fly Dressing’, first published in 1932. I have a 3rd edition (1950) but there does not seem to be any additions to the 1st.
The Glanrhos is the name of a salmon beat on a Welsh river, I forget what, but was introduced by a Mr. Graham Clarke and who is refered to as ‘late’ in the book and the fly may have been tied for the first time some time in the 19thc. I have not been able to find any other references than Nemes and Woolley and it was from Wooley that Nemes got his.
Woolley’s book is excellent, he was a professional fly tyer and a very good clear writer. Anyone interested in learning the older and more obscure fly tying techniques will enjoy his book. I find these techniques very much apply to today.

Donald, excellent post you’ve made and very interesting site you have. I also like to tie spiders, but they are no where as well done as your ties are. Thank you you for this post.
