Gimbal

Could one of you give me a short lesson on what a gimbal is and what it is used for?

Thanks - Tim

I’ll assume you mean on a HD fishing rod?

The gimbal socket can either be fastened to say a fighting chair…or even a belt supported by the fishermans shoulders and it intended to support the physical weight of a “deep sea” rod. ( Them boogers can get REAL heavy) With the possibility of a huge capacity reel and the physical weight of the rod itself…a person would tie very quickly if they had to support all that weight without assistance.

Sully - Thanks. I figured it was something along that line. My cousin wants me to make him a HD rod however I think it might be beyond my limited experience and expertise. I found a picture of one attached to the butt of a rod which brings another question. Would you affix the gimbal directly to the rod blank or onto the rear grip?

Thanks again.

Tim

From guys that I used to run around with that DID make such jumbo rods…

  1. You had better know exactly what you are doing to keep from getting someone killed. The wrong “style” ( for lack of knowing the proper term) of rod and the right fish gets someone pulled right out of the boat and he gets deep sixed 'case he cant get unfastened.

The Gimbel of the combo goes on the rod BLANK. ( the very end) and SOLIDLY mounted.

Maybe…???..what he really needs is a rod with a HEAVY duty " fighting butt" on it???

Sully Don’t know if he would want a gimbal or not. I was exploring rod components on the net this AM before I call him this afternoon. He does a lot of striper fishing in San Fran Bay plus they go out into the Pacific for salmon & bottom fish.

Thanks again

Tim
