Gill Buster Heaven

We took in a small lake yesterday with a local reputation for good LMB. With the wind-blemished surface decided to use the black Gill Buster. And drove the crappies nuts. Right against the bank, with a deep dropoff, in the shade. Short strips. Just a blast. Very leechy looking when stripped. Bluegill. Bass, though small ones. Even one nice yellow perch. My heaven ended with the fly caught into the foilage somewhere. Threw lots of other stuff with some success. I’m eating well tonight. JGW

sounds great wish I was having that luck.

Um…I think the Gillbuster used was this one…

Yep, that’s the one. I tie mine a little different. I tie the hourglass weight on first, then lay the zonker over the top. I like the balance a little better. Then I wrap the thread from the weight back on the shank to just above the hook point and back, under the weight and create a head. It helps to snip a triangular point at the head of the zonker for a prettier wrapdown. I like matching thread to the zonker color. Black has been an overwhelming favorite color. White has worked well for river walleyes, white bass, crappies in lakes and rivers. Yellow has been okay. Same with “natural” and the orange. I’ve got them in olive and chartruses, but seem to always fall back on black. JGW
