Gates' Laid Back Hex (Carnage variation)

Foam update to the standard tie. Might lose it to a tree or fish, but you won’t have to tie on a new one in the dark because it stopped floating.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #6
thread/rib - UTC 140 hopper yellow
core/shuck - Congo Hair brown
tail - moose body hair
body - 1mm foam tan
body hackle - grizzly (undersize by 2)
front hackle - brown/grizzly mix
wing - deer hair

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at mid-point

tie in a loop of CH

clean, stack, measure (2x hook length) some moose body hair; tie in, hook CH loop onto the gallows

wrap moose halfway up the core and back down

tie in foam strip (1/3 gap width)

brush underbody with Super Glue, wrap to base of tail (adjust tension for desired thickness)

Part 2

brush on a little more Super Glue and wrap back down; tie off/trim

tie in body hackle

spiral thread up body

palmer hackle to tail, capture tip with thread and continue rib to base of body; trim hackle tip

trim shuck

tie in front hackles

wrap hackles (leave 1 eye width up front for wing tie-in); tie off/trim

Part 3

clean, stack, measure (tips to base of tail) a clump of deer hair; tie in, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

trim out hackle underneath

Now that is a good looking and practical pattern for the MI hatch! Never attempted to tie a Carnage variation, but will play around with this one for sure. Thanks

With spent wings it would make a very practical & efficient flight bug for the Hex . Because they are big bugs the spinners are quite active went they hit the water … some of the most effective non-foam spinner imitations have palmered bodies. the fish take the spinners aggressively and just sip the hatchers that come later in the night which is just the opposite of the smaller mayflies

Thanks for the info; fished brown drake hatches but never the hex. It would be simple enough to split/splay the wings (in the center of the thorax, hackling behind and in front); a synth wing would probably be better than ungulate hair for that application.

Scott

Interesting. I want to do a Carnage Hex pattern. I was thinking about a parachute version, and use some Chartreuse Egg Yarn for the post, to help with visibility.

AllenOK Hex are on the water at night. bugs are tan w/ yellow highlights… i used all white imitations and the fish did not mind and i could almost see my fly if there was a little moonlight

I am truly surprised no one has come up with night vision goggles for fishermen.

They are available, but not advertised for fishing. I’ve used a head mount version very effectively. The good ones are no cheap. Google them.

What I should have said was I’m surprised no company has slapped their logo on a set and marketed them for fishermen (at an even greater price). For folks (not me) willing to pay $85 for nippers (nippers!) I doubt they’d even blink at the price.

Scott, quick question. How wide do you cut the foam for this pattern? I’ve got a package of razor foam, 1 sheet of 1mm and 2 sheets of .5mm yellow foam.

Allen,

1/3 gap width (it’s noted in Part 1 of the SBS). Go with the 1mm; the .5 is too thin for a fly this size.
