Hey, if you fish offshore, car gas is in the noise. I used approx 4200 gals last summer chasing tuna. Now that’s a quantity of fuel where an extra buch a gallon will have some serious effect.
We will be doing some traveling this summer. We have planned it for a long time. I don’t care if it goes to $15 gal. We’re going.
I may have to cut Nancy’s allowance if all we can afford it beer and gas.
With the price of petrol here in New Zealand. I’m thinking of buying a horse.
Will go places a vehicle cant and I have the time what little I have left to get out and enjoy at Natures Pace. Jax
I’m a much better Fly fisher when talking fishing, than when I’m Actually Fly fishing!
Won’t effect me much if at all. 90% of my fishing is within 300 yards of my house. Pond or smallmouth river. I am blessed indeed.

We will still get to the same places we always go to . Just have to cut back on some of the extras.
The gas that may hinder our journeys comes from our black lab We have learned the hard way . Always wait till we get to the lake before we feed him . The gas given off in the confines of the truck will stop you dead in your tracks.
Time is the fire that we burn in .
let’s see, I live a 2 1/2 minute drive from a put in at my local river, six miles to the take out and hardly ever anybody else fishing.Yeah it will slow down my long distance travels of 100 miles or more but under that not really .
I can see more overnight camping trips. Just fine with me for I like fishing late afternoon/nights, and also early morning. I can live with it. One positive is the hope that there will be less pressure from ski-doos. Same with noisy ATVs. Went on an 11 mile canoe trip down the MN River on Sunday and right in the middle of the trip on came one louder than a train. To each his own, although I cannot understand how one can appreciate the beauty of nature causing all that noise. I guess I’d be much more tolerant if they’d put mufflers on the things. JGW
Since I drive 35 miles each way to work that costs me $7 a day in gas. I figure if I quit my job and move TO the river for the summer, I’ll save $35 a week or $560 over the summer…how can you justify not going fishing with that math!
In the past I have traveled with my truck and 5th wheel trailer on 2-4 day trips, almost always alone. But this year the trailer will be used primarily as a guest house. I had a canopy custom built for my truck which is 6" above cab height and being a woodworker I built up the inside with a nice group of lightweight cabinets. I included shelves, over head racks, lots of interior lights, clothes hooks, etc.
Not only is it comfortable(and a real conversation piece!)but my gas mileage went up by 1 1/2 mpg when it was installed. So trips out to Montana and Idaho will costs much less and I will have the advantage of greatly increased mobility as well.
I am currently shopping for a 30mpg vehicle that I can buzz out to some of the 100 or so lakes that are within a 2 hour drive of my home here in northeastern Washington. A small front wheel drive station wagon big enough to haul a Super Fat Cat and a little gear would be just fine.
Putting gas prices in perspective-my wife who takes her cooking and baking very seriously-pays $39.95 for a pint of quality vanilla extract plus shipping. I believe that comes out to $319.60 per gallon. It’s a damn good thing she only uses a teaspoon at a time!

Like John, I will also do more overnight camping trips. Some of my trips, especially for trout, will be once a month as they are 3/4-full tank trips in the jeep. Lots of good warmwater fishing within a 1/4 tank of home, so will be more of that.

Allan,
I’m going to get my GEO Metro inspected this morning. She gets about 50 to 55 mpg @ 65 mph so we can car pool to some good streams. If gas goes to $3.00 per gallon, we’ll still make it to Roscoe and back on five gallons or $15. $7.50 each won’t be too bad! To the Genny and back would cost us only $4.50 each! If it goes much higher I’m thinking Mopeds?

No Wind Knots…
Your reasoning has a familiar tone to it. If I buy a set of tires for my Geo Metro instead of a Rolls Royce I’ve saved a quarter million bucks or so, right? Dang! I have a wife who can do that kind of math. Its either feminine math or government math and only they can understand it. Are you a lady or a government official?

1990 fishing vehicle has 210,000+ miles on it with no payments for the last ten years!!! Pooh on the gas prices - I’m going fishin’wherever!!
Hmmmmm,…let’s see…
If you’re paying 25 cents more a gallon now than at the end of last season, and you use 20 gallons of gas on a trip to the waters, it’s costing you an extra $5.00. About the price of one Absolut Cranberry and a tip. I’d drink a little less to fish a little more. How about you?

I tie flies to give the fish something to laugh about.
Unless I need to tow the boat, I’ll use our car for the weekend fishing adventures. Much better gas milage and it is also a tad bit more comfortable.
I’m fortunate enough to live close to a variety of different rivers. Instead of taking longer trips, I’ll just spend more time on my homewaters.
Allen,
My wife and I are leaving Alaska on May 1st for a two-month vacation. We purchased a new RV last year and we’ve been planning this get-away for years. Yes I know, the gas prices are climbing higher and higher but sometimes you just have to say, “To hell with it, we are going and we’re going to have fun.” And of course there will be some fishing to be done along the way. Some people might think we are crazy to spend this much money on fuel, but if we don’t do it now, when? We aren’t getting any younger and time waits for no man. So, it’s off to see the “Lower 48” for us.
cheers,
Mike

Hello. When I eat a lot of beans I get really bad gas which makes it hard to ride in an enclosed car. But heck, I just love me beans so my partners are just going to have to suffer the high price of gas; I’m goin fishin!
Snipe, been married a long time. I take good notes.
Actually, I am consciously nursing the old car specifically so we can delay those nasty car payments, and use that money for playtime.
If it was my wife, we would have bought the new car AND do all the play, and hope it all works out.
If I worked for the government, I’d simply call up a corporate big-wig, and tag along on his Lear.

Hey guys,
I wasn’t talking about nearby fishing as some of you, who are lucky enough to have, mentioned. Although not totally clear, my question was about non-local trips.
Oh, and by the way, I didn’t mean to imply that my travel plans are or would be effected.
Allan
Allan,
In that case, no.
