I participated in my cousin’s garage sale friday. I had a few things for sale including a old flyfishing vest. A customer picked up my old vest and brought it to me and said look! On the fly patch were 2 REAL BUGS!
I told him that they (bugs) were free!
Doug
Doug;
I’d of charged him!!
TWO DOLLARS A BUG!!! Guaranteed to stay alive for at least 30 minutes!
I didn’t realize you were a bait fisherman
Remember that post a while back about What Flyfishing was? Yea! I tie those size 32’s (real bugs) on bare micro hooks and let er rip!!!
PETA won’t get on me for that will they?
doug
That’s funny , Guess they felt safe there or maybe they was a hopeing for a free ride to the water…lol
THREE DAYS OF GARAGE SALE!!!
I’m like some of you guys, I never spent more than a few minutes at any Garage Sale in my whole life!!!
I went into this with my cousin Brenda, totally committed because she is a Garage Sale expert. Also she lives in a PRIME neighborhood for selling things.
I took everything of mine that wasn’t nailed down. Morning to Night, 3 days, sunburned, delirious, met every kind of person you can imagine.
Folks, I learned that I think too 'simply" you bring junk to the G. Sale and you sell it! Simple RIGHT?
WRONG! I feel like I just took a Crash Course in G. Sales.
You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff that went on.
- I had to learn how to price my sales items
- I had to learn to negotiate a price
- I had to learn to make change$$$$$$
- I had to be cautious and not joke with all the customers.
- I unintentionally stepped on a Dry Fly fisherman toes. This person wasn’t in the mood to hear how well wet flies caught fish. He snapped at me but still bought my fishing bag. I apologize to anyone right now for not being sensitive about Dry Flies, I will work on that.
Today (3rd Day) I took some of my flyfishing stuff, flies, tackle. I wore my fishing hat and vest and had 4 fly boxes opened on the table. I was only willing to part with one box of flies, but my main objective was to expose people to flies and flyfishing. I had many interested people write down www.flyanglersonline.com
I just wanted to try and spark some interest in flyfishing, by showing the customers my stuff. Many women were fascinated by my flies. Fly tying is artistic and the many varieties just amazed people.
I have never heard of anything, like flyfishing, that has so many strange perceptions. People would quote short sentences about WHAT the knew about flyfishing and it was never enough info for them to formulate a opinion. If more women could learn how to flyfish, it could be great for the sport.
Happy to report there is a club in Beaverton called The Stonefly Maidens.
I only advertised FAOL and talked to some people about flyfishing, besides selling my stuff (not fly related stuff) You’ve heard of Drive By Shootings? Well there are many Drive By Garage Salers!!!
Now HOW can you tell WHAT in the heck is for sale if you slow your car down for 5 seconds and drive away??

Anyway tomorrow, I will be meditating with a ice pack on my head and aloe vera on my burned skin. YEA! that was Garage Sale Boot Camp!
Doug
sounds like a good one wish i was there.
This incident is ‘bugging me’ more every day! I read my own story again and it sounds ‘made up’.
I guess it proves if you live long enough, you never know what will happen!

I have to tell you how. We slow down, and peek out our car windows (always better to have a attentive passenger) and if we dont see anything that ‘catches’ our eye. Then we keep driving. As to hurry and get to the next big sale …
There’s Drive By Garage Salers in Pennsylvania too???
As far as moving on to the NEXT big sale, WE were the biggest sale!
It was quite an education!
Doug

Theres Drive By Garage Salers Everywhere. My mom lives in NY, and we did just that this past weekend.
We are a dime a dozen…
We do drive bys at garage sales all the time. If we drive by and all we see is predominantly racks of clothes, and little “junk” around, we drive on by
Continually amazes me at how MANY clothes there are in this world !!!
I’m a drive by saler. If I don’t see fishing sticks pointing skyward, I keep on driving.

Joe, Ford Fenders hanging from the garage, Dardevil Lures, Wicker Baskets, Moose Lamps, Dancing Girls?
Doug,
I had a family BBQ and two of my nieces started looking at the flies I was tying. I am working on hoppers, with a few crickets laying around. The two girls both about eleven thought the flies were really neat and then one of them asked me, how did I suck the insides out??
Marion
(busy sucking the inside out of more hoppers)
ladyflyfisher,
That is very funny!! Part of the reason I took my fly boxes to the Garage Sale on the 3rd day was to enjoy the reactions and comments from people who knew little about flyfishing, except the ever popular, “FLY CASTING IS SO INTERESTING!”
I have always been tuned into the artistic expression of fly tying. I still have a little boy’s wonder and curiosity.
I’m so glad that tyers keep coming up with interesting fly patterns.
One conversation I had at the Garage Sale had to do with the big picture of flyfishing. The person told me they had seen flyfishers casting on TV and that’s all they had seen about flyfishing. I told the person, “There is a LOT more to flyfishing than casting!”
There must be a LOT of people who are intimidated by the ‘Big Picture’
Doug P.S. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a Show, like Art Linkletter’s Kids Say The Darndest Things
