I was wondering if anybody knew any good patterns for Gar. I have seen one in a thick weed bed in one of the areas I fish. I would love to hook into one on my 8wt.
tie some unbraided rope to your hook. The braids will catch in the gar’s teeth.
Here’s a picture of what gardenfish is talking about:

I also need leader recomendations. Anybody know how to make the rope lures?

A while ago, I remember seeing a pattern for the hookless fly for gar, however, I can no longer find it. This “Save the Gar” site has a description of what they tend to use: [url=http://www.savethegar.org/flyfishing.php:697ca]http://www.savethegar.org/flyfishing.php[/url:697ca]
I found instructions on how to make the rope lure on the site jsalkas posted.
If you are going to fish for gar with an entangling fly, you sure as heck better fish it on a heavy leader. The lightest I have ever fished for gar with is 20 lb. mono, and that’s for smaller fish. A gar with a broken-off fly wrapped around its jaws will likely be a dead fish.
irondragon, leader for gar:
4-6 feet of 40 or 50# mono. You don’t need a delicate presentation.
Now if you are fishing flies with hooks that you want to be able to break off, then you need:
4’ 40/5# mono
2’ 20# mono.

What kind of line to leader connection do you use for the heavy leaders and what knot do you use to tie 50lb. mono to a fly?
Non-Slip mono loop:

And for attaching to leader, use an Albright or do one of these doubly-served loops:
