Galloup North Branch Caddis SBS

Another fly in the deer hair body/cross wrap style made popular in Michigan. Feel free to use a contrasting thread; I was going with materials within easy reach. Here’s the video if you have 24 minutes (have to admit, I skimmed thru most of it)

hook - Dai Riki 300 #12
thread - UTC 140 grey brown
tail/body/wing - deer hair
hackle - grizzly

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend and back

clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of deer hair; trim, tie in

spiral wrap body to bend and back, crossing wraps

clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) another clump of deer hair; trim butts/tie in

Part 2

tie in hackle

wrap hackle, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Regards,
Scott

Nice SBS as always. I like Kelly’s videos, but I don’t need to watch 24 minutes after this post.

Scott, I see that you made the thread base lumpy. Was that to keep the deer hair body from twisting? Nice fly should float forever.

That’s me being lazy; once I laid a smooth base down going to the bend, I wanted to get back to the tie-in mark as quick as I could. I cranked down on the hair pretty hard at both ends which keeps the hair from rotating too much.

Scott
