Furling Formula Needed

Would like to start furling 6/0 uni-thread to make 3-4 wt 7 foot leaders…any formulas out there?

Like the ones I get from Streamside but I have wrecked enough at 5.00 a crack that it’s time.

I am confident I can build the jig and get the process, just not sure of a recipe for this size and weaight…8 foot would be OK as well.

Sorry, no funds to buy the DVD at this time.

10 (5 per leg) strands 28". 8 (5 on one leg 3 on the other) strands 33". 6 (3 per leg) strands 33". This will give you a 7’ leaders after taking up the 10%.
Making your start and end loops approx. 14" long with give you a 12/10/8/6 taper.
I have used this formula in 6/0 Uni thread on 2 to 5 wt rods. They will turn over up to a size 10 dryfly.
Kaboom1 has developed a treatment for thread leaders that keeps them bouyant for several hours.
I’m playing with a formula that will turn over large hoppers, no solid results yet.

Thanks, that is exactly what I needed…now I just have to finish up the rod I’m building, wait for a rainy day and hit the fly shop for some thread and I’m ready.

Probably start furling before the rod is done though.

FWIW, I used some of Kaboom1’s magic paste on a furled leader at the MIFI, and it floated that puppy like a cork. No smell or residual greasiness that I could detect, and he says it makes for a great lip balm as well.

A 200 yard spool of 6/0 Uni tying thread will give you 9 7’ leaders which will more than cover the cost of the board! I do suggest picking up a spool of sewing thread to start with so you don’t waste the good stuff during the learning curve.
Somthing to do while the epoxy cures on that rod you’re building.

Search doesn’t come up with a formula for Kaboom’s Magic Paste, is that proprietary ?

Back in them there old timey days of fly fishing, many fishers made their own dry floatant by dissolving paraffin wax in white gas (an endangered species!). I soak all of my thread furled leaders in a saturated solution of paraffin (canning) wax and naphtha. Works for me.

To make the mix, I put canning wax shavings in a small jar and cover with the naphtha, set the jar in the oven of my kitchen stove, and set the oven on “WARM”. After the wax has dissolved, I add more shavings until no more will dissolve. I put my leaders into the dissolved solution and leave them for 10-30 minutes; take them out and hang them to “dry”. My kitchen rage is electric, as opposed to gas, so there is no flame to ignite the naphtha fumes. “Drying” is actually the excess naphtha evaporating from the treated leader, and because of it’s volatility, goes pretty rapidly.

Once cooled, the mix can be used as a paste.

Fish don’t seem to be ‘turned off’ by this treatment.
