Furled leaders…are they as good as I’ve been reading? I think I understand the principle behind them but am curious as to why they wouldn’t spook the fish…they seem like they would. Being new to FAOL, I don’t really know what the policy is regarding mentioning specific companies when posting, so to the moderators, if I’m in violation, please edit accordingly. I came across a company named Blue Sky while searching the web for info on furled leaders. Does anyone know if their products are reputable? I especially liked their strike indicator setup for nymphing…that is where the subject of furled leaders first came up…on another post. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have to respectfully disagree with that.
If you are not a good caster and are slapping and slurping the water with your fly line and all your casts are landing harshly. Then it really doesn’t matter how lightly the short furled leader is laying down because most all the fish in the area are going to be spooked away from your fly line slapping and slurping the water all over the place.
I have to respectfully disagree with that.
If that’s the case it’s not the fault of the leader thats spooking the fish, it’s the caster!!
I like to fish smallish streams, where I usually have to cast straight upstream, or only a modest angle from there. I’m concerned that, because I like to use slack line casts a lot, the end of the furled section might bop a trout on the head (the tippet section would be effectively shortened by the slack waves). Since I’ve always used mono leaders, I’m thinking that the thicker and opaque furled section would be a lot more visible to a fish under these circumstances. I can’t stand 30 feet away, and throw a nice quartering cast with a curve; it’s upstream, with the fly a little up from the fish. Does a furled leader also give me an advantage here, or should I stick with mono?
Does anybody know if there is a video out there showing how to furl leaders?
I have read all I can from the various websites but some of the steps in the processes still confuse me. I guess I need to actually see how it is done before I can grasp the principal of it all.
If I remember correctly, Blue Sky is someone on here. They are being too modest to rat themselves out. If I could remember the user, I would do it for them, but alas, age is upon me.
Also, there is another member who has a DVD that has gotten rave reviews on how to furl leaders. Kathy Scott I think is the name of the person who produced it. (Someone correct me if I am wrong.) I need to find it also as I ned to get it too.
Don’t see why not? If you have something that’s marketable…go for it. Good old American free enterprise. Just beware, there might be tax implications (the downfall of the free enterprise system). Give it a shot…nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I have heard it said it takes a particlular trait to just sit at a bench and tie for 8+ hours at a time day in and day out. Why not break it up with making furled leaders? Kathy Scott’s dvd is a great resource. I built my jig based on her instructions and I am ready to go after my next fly swap. If you start a thread here on the bb Kathy, Jack Hise and Kaboom1 (Brad) to name a few will more than likely chime in with excellent info.
You make them, people will buy them. Offer to make them for the store and you take the profit, with no charge to the store (unless they REALLY TAKE OFF) What has the store got to loose, plus they will be offering a new item.
You fish with a furled and you become a believer…they are fantastic. Don’t know bought the rest of you, but if I truely believe in a product, I can sell it.
If I could sell them to ArkAnglers it would be good. They have three stores in Buena Vista, Salida, and Pueblo. I told them already to handle furled leaders, but they’re old school, and didn’t know about them.
I also have a friend that I tie for that would put them in his shop. he has a web site too. The problem is he doesn’t sell much fly fishing stuff.
Something to think about anyway. How’s the learning curve on making them?
Hardest part is that DARN loop, but once you get it down, it is a piece of cake. I like Kathy’s demo, but I doo better with a peg in a Vise stand. More Horizontal than vertical.
