Looking for some info on furled leaders.
Want to use them on a 5 wt. DT silk line cane rod setup for dry flies.
Leader length of 9-12’.
Also, what is the best leader to line connection for them?
Thanks beaverkill54

Castwell Knot …line to leader…if you don’t use it…some sort of loop to loop…
What sort of info are you after?
beaverkill54,
Try this link. It might help. My suggestion is; if you can buy one of these DVD’s, buy one. Furled leaders have no memory and lay out a tippet as soft as cottonwood fluff on a still pond. I use a 6 foot leader.

Give this one a shot…Bud
Do not use the ‘Castwell’ with most furled leaders. They are too flimsy and the knot will fall apart.
My recommendations are:
Order Kathy Scott’s DVD on making Furled Leaders and you will not regret it.
I use the “Castwell” knot for my Furled Leader to line connection and it has never failed and makes a very small connection which goes through the rod guides with no problems.
JC You’re pulling my leg here I know! I’ve used the “Castwell Knot” on several types of furled leaders with no problems.
Beaverkill54, a 7’ furled leader will turn over 4 - 6 ft. of tippet depending on the size of the fly and tippet X rating. PM me with your mail address and I’ll send you a furled leader to try. I learned from Kathy Scotts DVD and if you want to make your own you can’t go wrong with getting it.
Just had a thought on my recommendations…
I have never used or seen a silk line and do not know if the “Castwell” knot works with a silk line. If the silk line has the same coating as regular fly line, I recommend the Castwell knot. If it does not, then I do not know if the Castwell knot will work with silk. Hopefully, someone on this site will know.
OH OH!! Warren and I both, at the same time, questioned Superman’s logic! Hmmmm, I feel my home being lifted from it’s foundation!!
Before I loose contact I will add that furled leaders work, in most contitions.
Byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeee!!
JC did not refer to Silk line, just furled leaders! Is that SYLK line Cortland?
SILK or SYLK, The knot works well with both. Had a guy once tell me my knot did not work with his furled leader, maybe he messed it up… Oh well,

After you absorb all of the great info given by the posters above; I can tell you this much about my experiences: THREAD furled leaders are the cat’s meow IMHO. I am less enthusiastic with the mono versions.
So IF you don’t make your own and instead buy a Blue Sky or Feather Craft mono leader and don’t like it; before you say they are not for you; try a thread furled leader.
The ONLY negative I can say about the thread leaders is that they do tend to get wrapped around the tip of your rod more than the mono furled leaders or any other leader type. If you ever fished with braided line on a spinning reel or casting reel you will know what I mean. But other than that; I like them a LOT!
Hi Jack. I just recently purchased the materials to make a jig for making furled leaders. Haven’t made the first one yet, but I was wondering if you had any tips on making them. I think I have read most of the articles on the web discussing furled leaders, but I am still trying to figure out how to decide what formula to use.
I figure I may need more than one furled leader for the range of flies I use. I use a 6wt rod and for flies I use as small as a size 18 pheasant tail all the way of to a size 2 Clouser Minnow (I know, that’s a bit of a stretch on a 6wt, but I don’t have to throw it too for).
If you don’t make your own…Feather-Craft recently [don’t know if it is still going] had an offer that if you bought one [or more] furled leader[s] they would give you free shipping on the whole order.
