furled leader setup

after receiving a couple of furled leaders from a board member, its time to try them out.

so i set up the terminal end this way:

12 inch or so of orange amnesia butt section, nail knotted to fly line, loop knot on the leader end.

loop to loop connection of butt section and furled leader.

added about 3 feet or so of tippet using a clonch knot to the loop at the end of the furled leader.

that should work??

Go get 'em, Big Guy!!!

Norm,

You may want to consider a loop-to-loop at the tippet end also. This makes it much easier to change tippet plus less chance of cutting the shorb loop when you do change tippet. I usually add at least 5 feet of either 4 or 6 pound tippet to mine. If I have 6 pound tippet on and want to “swing some wet flies or smaller flies”, I will just add 2 or 3 feet of 4 pound test to the end of the 6 pound test tippett using a Surgeon’s knot. Don’t be afraid of using a longer tippet than most people do. The furled leader will turn it over very well. Matter of fact, sometimes when I am fishing, I feel the turn over is not quite what it was when I started and find that adding another 2 feet of tippet makes it turn over very well. As you change flies and shorten the tippet it will affect the turn over. Experiment with different tippet lengths and see what happens.

Have fun and do keep us posted on what happens…

Norm, your setup should work but I would echo what Warren said…loop to loop leader to tippet.

Also many of us furlers if not using the amnesia indicator will use a Castwell knot to the furled leader butt loop.

that knot just looks unsafe to me.

I think we’ve been there before, Norm.

I know what you mean…I felt the same way…but it works.
I might have said …Ya but what about really big fish you don’t want to lose…JC said …never failed in the salt or where ever…

My thoughts are… if I want a simple knot I can tie on the water I’ll use it…if I’m not going to change often but maybe at home./… your mentioned setup is excellent…

Good luck with the Amnesia…Just me, but I don’t get it:D

Norm -

It may look unsafe, but don’t kid yourself.

The Castwell Knot is an excellent way to attach the butt end of a furled leader with a shorb loop to your fly line. It is simple, strong, and requires about a quarter inch or so of your fly line sacrificed to the knot, which should last a loooooonnnng time.

John

so lets hear your opinion on amnesia!

remember not everybody rigs up the same way as you do

My furled leader has orange thread twisted into the butt end of the leader. It helps me to quickly sight my leader in different light conditions. I guess you can do without it, but I’m used to the design.

"so lets hear your opinion on amnesia! "

Norm,

Since you requested the above, here are my thoughts on amnesia…

I have used the Castwell Knot for almost 2 years and find, that even though it looks like it will fail, I have never had a problem with it. The only thing different I have done with it was to coat it with something to assist it with going through the rod guides. I bought a 7wt combo to use on the few smallmouth trips that I have planned and when it arrived, it had a mono section nail-knotted to the end of the fly line with a Perfection Loop for attaching the furled leader. I did not think I would like that, but, after using the rod, I discovered that I do not even notice that it is there plus it seems to pass through the rod guides better than the Castwell. With that in mind, I purchased a spool of red Cajun 30 pound test mono and installed the mono section on all my other rods including my 3wt and like this set up very well. I purchased it in red because everyone on here lead me to believe that they use it for an indicator. I never see the red section on my outfits while I am fishing, but, that is probably because I never use a thread furled leader for my style of fishing. I use a Berkley Vanish Transition flurorcarbon furled leader because it sinks very quickly and takes my flies down deeper which is what I want and like. I do not use any dry flies. I never use a strike indicator either. I watch the end of my fly line like a hawk and it lets me know what is going on. I guess if you use a thread furled leader and grease it up so it will float, you would be able to see the amnesia section and use it as a strike indicator, but, if you are a nymph, wet fly, streamer, bugger, etc., type fisherman, like myself, and use a sinking type furled leader, you will only be able to see the end of your fly line and it would not make any difference what color mono section you used. So, in my mind, if you do not use any dry flies and only use sinking type flies, like myself, the color of the short mono section on the end of the fly line is of no value as far as being able to track your fly but I do like the short section on the end of my fly lines for attaching my furled leaders because I change out my furled leaders too often sometimes because I feel the furled leader has been damaged from rocks, etc., and sometimes just to change it out for no reason at all. I am really bad at preventative maintenance and will change out some furled leaders for no reason at all except that it has been on there for some time and I want to change it. Hey, I make my own furled leaders and enjoy making them and since I do not make and sell them, I need to have some excuse for making a new one! I even replace the belts, disc brake pads, drum brake pads and spark plugs on my little Ranger at 50,000 miles whether they need it or not plus change the oil and filter every 3,000!

Sorry for the long reply and I look forward to your experiences with the furled leaders.

warren

i just got back from a field trial using one of the furled leaders you sent me and i’m currently impressed.

i fished the leader in the current set up i described above (amnesia butt section) and it performed quite nicely. it turned over the leader with a weighted fly as well as with a foam fly. it also turned over in the wind. its a windy day up here in new england. so far so good. maybe more testing tomorrow.

cheers

norm

i used amnesia because i was lazy and didnt feel like searching for the other materials i use for a butt section. i like to use a butt section at the end of my fly line (and occasionally a braided loop to loop connector). does amnesia work for me? sure and thats all that counts! i have used the orvis butt material and also used climax stuff.

Norm,

That is great to hear! I know that I will never look back at any other leader now that I have experienced the furled leader. I really enjoy their roll over and how durable they are. Like you, I now like the mono butt section on my fly lines. I have tried the braided slip over the fly line loops and do not like them. From my experience with them, my fly line coating would develope a crack in the coating right where the end of the braided slip on loop ended and this was not something I wanted. I will stay with the mono butt section. Do keep me posted on your experiences with the furled leaders and remember that all you have to do is contact me when you wish more or a different furled leader made up of different material and I will gladly send them your way for you to try out.

Stay in touch…
