I have a 4wt.Stowaway, that resides in my pick-up. For some reason it seems I fish this rod more than others , simply because it’s with me all the time. I never really liked the looks of that rod, so I deceided to spruce it up a bit. Adding a new grip and reel seat sure improved its looks.
There are 4 different kinds of cork in the handle. …See if you can name them
I can name 3 but not 4. You have portigese, burnt and burl, but I dont reconize the 4th. If you made this yourself it is very nice. The reel seat matchs up very well with the cork nice job there.
Nice work!!
I love the burnt cork!
I built a Fenwick world class back in the 80’s and used two rings in the front and two in the back kind of like the rings on a bowling pin. I had to make the grip longer than usual for my big mitts.
I built one 4wt with a full wells grip, although I did not put a fighting butt on it. I thought I would like it since I have large hands. Quite frankly, I don’t like casting it that much. The full wells grip works well when you are casting a higher weight rod with power, but doesn’t seem to lend itself to finesse casting typical of lower weights. I still like the rod and it will float a fly out with great accuracy, but it just feels funny in the hand.
You’ll read in another post about what people like and dont like in a rod.
This is “my” rod ! One of many. Most of “My” rods of lighter weight have superfine grips on them.
But being this is one of “My” rods, I can play with all sorts of stuff and float my own boat.
Who knows after I fish it for awhile I might deceide I want a purple grip with orange trim bands shaped like a football…“my” rod , “my choice”.
Like Ol’ Frank sang…*I did it my way *
When I build for others though , I build what floats their boats !!! …not mine.
PS Spoonplugger…all builders are a little weird…why else would they be playing with cork and sniffin’ glue.
Smernsky You are right your rod your way. I myself like the fenwick or western as they are called now grips. Light rod or not I miss them and that is why I am starting to turn my own cork.
